The Seward County Saints opened up their 2011 Tennis season on Thursday afternoon in Wichita and did so in style as they knocked off the #21 team in NCAA Division II, the Newman Jets 5-4 to move to 1-0 on the season. The two teams played close all afternoon as Newman took 2 of 3 doubles matches before the Saints came back to win 3 of the first 5 singles matches to tie things up at 4-4. It would all come down to #6 singles where the Saints Lucas Izkovitz would start where he finished the fall with a win against Kevin Klein to give Seward the 5-4 win.

The Jets would win at both the #1 and #3 doubles slots by the scores of 8-1 and 8-5 while Raphael Machado and Felipe Cruz would pick up the first Seward win of the day with an 8-5 victory in #2 doubles over Chris Copenhauer and Igor Ozegovic. The Saints would even things up at their #1 player Laercio Lobo won a grueling three set match with Jim Dunseith 6-7, 7-5, 10-7 and went ahead 3-2 as Nathan Nelmes took care of Copenhauer 6-4, 6-2. Newman would get the win in #3 singles 6-4, 7-5 but Seward would bounce back to take the #4 singles slot easily 6-2, 6-3 as Machado got his second win of the day, this time over Nathan Peters. Christiano Mendes and Ozegovic would play a classic match in #5 singles and the Jets Ozegovic would edge out Mendes in the end 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 to knot things again at 4. Thatís when Izkovitz took over for the Saints, winning his #6 singles match 6-7, 6-1, 10-1 to secure the 5-4 win for the Saints in their opener. In other matched on the day which didnít count towards the match standings Sewardís Alex Richards won 8-5 and the Saints Antoine Frietas got a victory over Jared Ferris also by the count of 8-5.
