After making sure that Tuesday’s Region VI Tournament 1st round game would be played in their own back yard thanks to three straight wins to close the regular season, the Seward County Lady Saints picked up in the playoffs right where they left of the Jayhawk West schedule by frustrating opposing offenses and coming out with smiles on their faces. Seward opened the game on a 17-0 run before visiting Ft. Scott finally got on the board 8:30 into the game and would push their lead to over 20 in the first half before going into the break up 29-10. The Greyhounds would get to within 12 early on in the second half but Seward would quickly pick up their game again and take a commanding lead into the final few minutes where they would wrap up a 64-41 victory to advance to the tournament quarterfinals.

The start of the game was a key to the game for both teams as Ft. Scott who was a notoriously slow starting squad matched up with a Seward group that was a few good starts away from being in the running at the top of the conference standings. The Lady Saints would get on the board first with a bucket from Mariah Lee that would get her going and set the stage for a big night by the Seward freshman. Ashlynn Knoll would make a couple of free throws and a three pointer and Lee would score twice more inside and five minutes into the game it was 12-0 Lady Saints. Moments later an offensive rebound and put back by Kayla Thomas would put Seward up 14-0 and she was fouled on the play and would make the free throw to make it 15-0 Seward with 14:07 to go. Ft. Scott couldn’t have been any worse on the offensive end of the floor as they struggled against a pressure defense from the Lady Saints and had trouble finding the hoop even when they did get shots off as they started the game 0 for 10 from the field while turning the ball over 7 times. Seward would take a 17-0 lead at the 12 minute mark and would keep Ft. Scott off the scoreboard until the 11:31 mark of the game when they finally broke through with a basket to make it 17-2. After scoring again to make it 17-4, the Lady Saints would run off 10 points in a row to go ahead 27-4 at the 5:12 mark before going into the half ahead 29-10. The Greyhounds numbers were dreadful in the first 20 minutes as they shot just 17% from the field and were 0 for 5 from the free throw line while coughing the ball up 15 times in the half.
To start the second half the Greyhounds looked like a new team, for 1:30 at least. They would score the first 7 points of the half on 3-3 shooting and would force a Seward timeout as they cut the Lady Saints lead to a dozen at 29-17. The teams would play even for the next three minutes until Mattie Yanke drained a three pointer for Seward to get them going again. The three ball would put Seward on top 38-23 and would jump start a 10-2 Lady Saints run to put them up 20 with 11:19 to go and all but punch their ticket to the second round. The Seward pressure would continue to be a problem for the Greyhounds who would turn the ball over 16 times in the second half and the Lady Saints would make them pay, getting layup after layup on the break as they took their largest lead of the game at 60-32 with 3:30 left on the clock. Seward would hold Ft. Scott without a field goal for the final 2:31 of the game and would finish the Hounds season with a 64-41 win in front of their home crown in the Greenhouse.
The Lady Saints would hold Ft. Scott to just 30% shooting on the night while forcing 31 Greyhound turnovers. The Seward backcourt of Hannah Rotolo, Autumn Miller, and Thomas wreaked havoc on the Ft. Scott guards as they combined for 14 steals in the game. Lee would lead the team with a game high 19 points to go along with 9 rebounds in a nice bounce back game for her while Thomas would tie her career high with 14 points and Yanke would pitch in 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win.
Seward wins their fourth straight and moves to 21-10 overall on the 2010-2011 season. They advance to the Region VI Quarterfinals for the 15th consecutive season. Their next opponent will be a familiar one for Lady Saints fans as Seward will matchup yet again with the Cowley Tigers at Koch Arena in Wichita. The two will duel it out primetime on Friday night as they draw the final game of the day at 7:00.
