The Seward County Lady Saints went one up and one down on their annual Holiday trip last week as they fell to St. Petersburg 75-48 before knocking off Hillsborough 67-51 on their home court to pick up their 10th win of the 2010-2011 season in their final tune-up before conference play begins Wednesday in Hutchinson.
Against a good St. Petersburg team on Wednesday, Seward could simply never find their footing. They shot just 23% from the field in the first half but held the 12-4 Titans to just 30 points and trailed by just 7 going into the locker rooms 30-23. The Lady Saints picked up the pace in the final 20 minutes but were run off the court by St. Petersburg who torched the nets for 45 second half points on 52% shooting from the floor and 71% shooting from the three point line as they blew the game open late and went on to win 75-48.
The Lady Saints shot just 28% as a team in the game while turning the ball over 29 times and being outrebounded by the Titans 43-35. Hanna Bognar was the only Lady Saint to reach double digits in the scoring column as she led Seward with both 10 points and 7 rebounds in the ballgame. Mattie Yanke scored 7 points and had a matching 7 rebounds in the defeat while Ashlynn Knoll scored 8 points and had 4 rebounds.
Going from the high point of their season with a pair of big wins in the Pizza Hut Classic over Northeastern and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M to arguably the low point in the blowout loss to St. Petersburg, the Lady Saints looked to rebound with a win Thursday afternoon against Hillsborough. Seward again came out of the blocks slow but stymied the Hawks on the defensive end of the floor, holding them to just 7 first half field goals on 19% shooting to take a 32-22 lead at the half. In the second half the Lady Saints began to find their rhythm and hit 52% of their shot attempts to go on to win going away 67-51.
Knoll led the charge for Seward, scoring 19 points and pulling down a career high 15 rebounds in the victory. Autumn Miller connected on a trio of three pointers in the win for the Lady Saints and finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Hannah Rotolo and Bognar narrowly missed double-doubles for Seward in the game as Rotolo ended the night with 9 points and 8 rebounds while Bognar finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
The 1-1 trip to the Sunshine State for Seward brings their overall mark to 10-4 on the year as they now turn their attention to Jayhawk West Conference Play where they look to begin defense of their crown on Wednesday in the Sports Arena in Hutchinson where they will take on the 24th ranked Lady Blue Dragons at 5:30.
