The Seward County Community College womenís basketball team finished their regular season Saturday night with a 76-50 loss at Barton County Community College. The Lady Saints (24-6, 10-6 Jayhawk West) secured a First Round Region VI home playoff game with their Jayhawk West Conference fourth-place finish. The Lady Saints First Round Region VI opponent will be Independence Community College (10-19, 9-7 Jayhawk East) who finished in fifth-place in the Jayhawk East Conference.

Barton County improved their playoff status jumping into second-place in the conference with a 12-4 record in conference competition (25-5 overall record).

The Seward County womenís basketball program hadnít lost to Barton County since the Region VI Tournament championship game in 2000, when the Lady Cougars won the Region VI and went to the NJCAA National Tournament. Last night that streak was broken as Barton County dominated Seward County in the second-half, outscoring SCCC 44-18.

The Lady Saints jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Sierra Radke hit a three-point field goal, Ilda Chambe made a jump shot in the paint and Amanda McCue made a running lay-up.

Seward held the lead in the first-half until Barton took the lead, 13-12, with 11:57 remaining in the first period. SCCC and the Lady Cougars had five lead changes in the first half with the score knotted up at 32-32 going into half-time.

Barton County scored 20 first-half points off 19 Seward County turnovers.

The second-half belonged to the Lady Cougars who opened the period with a 15-0 run as Seward County missed six shots and committed four turnovers in the first four minutes of the second-half.

Barton County maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final 17 minutes of the game.

The Lady Saints bench was outscored 23-0 in the second-half and 47-11 for the game. Seward County committed a season-high 34 turnovers and recorded a season-low seven assists.

Seward County was led by freshman center, Ilda Chambe, who scored 14 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Radke was the only other Lady Saints player in double-figures scoring with 10 points (3-for-9 field goals).

Barton County was led by a balanced attack with eight players scoring at least six points. BCCC was led in scoring by Andrea Barber (14 points), Stephanie NíGarsanet (10 points) and Brianna Buchanan (10 points). In addition, Barton County shot 53 percent from the field in the second-half (20-for-38).

Seward County will now prepare for their First Round Region VI home playoff game Wednesday, March 8, at the Green House. The Lady Saints and Lady Pirates will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. The buyout sponsors for Wednesday night will be Wheatridge Park Care Center, Days Inn and Stu Emmert's.
