The Seward County Community College volleyball team lost a hard fought match Thursday night to Barton County Community College (23-6, 6-0) at the Green House in Liberal, Kan. The Lady Saints (15-17, 2-2) were competitive in every game of the match but were unable to come away with the victory against a powerful Barton County program. Seward County fell to BCCC 23-30, 30-26, 18-30 and 31-33, a day before the Lady Saints will host the SCCC Invitational, where they will welcome three nationally ranked volleyball teams. Seward County drops to 2-2 in the Jayhawk West Conference with the loss Thursday night.

The first game of the match, Seward County took an early 15-10 lead. The Lady Cougars went on a 16-5 rally to go ahead of the Lady Saints and eventually took the game 30-23. Seward came out fighting in game-two, and held a four-to-six point lead throughout the match. Seward County posted a 21-16 lead and then cruised in the second portion of the game behind a strong serving performance from Jennifer Noel, who led SCCC to four consecutive points and to the 30-26 game victory.

The only game where Seward County trailed throughout was in game-three. Barton County jumped out to a sound lead and held onto the game with a 30-18 victory.

In game-four, Seward County closed Barton County’s lead to 23-24, and then tied the score 27-27. Seward County then controlled the game taking a 29-27 lead, but Barton County was too much outscoring the Lady Saints 6-2 in the final eight points of the match.

Seward County will be back in action on Friday, October 12, hosting the two-day SCCC Invitational. This year the Lady Saints are welcoming No. 1 Western Nebraska Community College (38-1), No. 7 University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (22-3), No. 9 Hutchinson Community College (13-8), Midland College (24-9) and Barton County.

The Lady Saints will play one match on Friday against No. 1 Western Nebraska C.C. at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, SCCC will play two matches against No. 7 Arkansas-Fort Smith at 1:00 p.m. and their final match of the invitational will be at 5:00 p.m. against Midland College.

There will be matches at the Green House on Friday from 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Admission is FREE to all matches at the Green House.
