The Seward County Community College volleyball team started a stretch in their schedule last Friday that has them playing seven nationally ranked opponents in eight matches. Seward County opened that stretch with a three-game loss at No. 9 Frank Phillips College last Friday night in Borger, Texas. The Lady Saints did compete and played well against the nationally ranked Lady Plainsmen (30-5) who defeated SCCC 28-30, 20-30 and 24-30. Seward County falls to 15-16 overall this season and remains 2-1 in the Jayhawk West and 1-1 in district competition.

The Lady Saints had an impressive night serving the ball with only two serving errors (97 % accuracy). Frank Phillips defended well at the net limiting Seward County to a .185 hitting percentage with 14 attack errors. SCCC was also strong at the net defensively collecting seven blocks (10 assisted/2 solo) while not committing an error.

Sophomore, Janete Ferreira, was the only Seward County player in double figures in kills with 13. Freshman, Jennifer Noel, led the Lady Saints with a .400 hitting percentage (7 kills- 1 error- 15 attacks). Freshmen Trisha Keahey and Jenny Schwier paced Seward County at the net with three blocks and two blocks respectively.

The Lady Saints also had production from defensive standout, Katy Troutman (team-high 14 digs) and from setter, Alex Droogsma, who posted a team-high 32 assists.

Seward County will open a four match home stand on Thursday, October 12 against Barton County Community College (26-6, 5-0) in a Jayhawk West Conference match starting at 6:30 p.m.

Also this weekend, Seward County will host the SCCC Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13-14). Competing at the Green House in the Invitational will be No. 1 Western Nebraska C.C. (35-1), No. 7 University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (21-3), No. 12 Hutchinson C.C. (12-8), No. 18 Midland College (22-7), Barton County C.C. and SCCC.

The Lady Saints will be in action on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. against Western Nebraska, and on Saturday, Oct. 14 against Arkansas-Fort Smith (1:00 p.m.) and Midland College (5:00 p.m.).
