The Seward County Lady Saints had an admirable showing in their opening weekend tournament against Kansas Wesleyan, Bethany, and Concordia Universities. Fanny Benincasa and Kauna Goncalves, the Lady Saints top two players were a perfect 6-0 on the weekend as Benincasa won her singles matches 6-1, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-1 while Goncalves cruised 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2. The two combined in doubles play to win 8-4 in their first match with Kansas Wesleyan and 8-2 over Bethany in their second match. Antigone Lowery and Sylvia Perez went 1-1 in two matches of singles competition as Lowery defeated Bethany’s #3 player 6-2, 6-2 and Perez won 6-2, 6-4 over Concordia’s #4. The two also paired to split their doubles action winning 8-5 over Kansas Wesleyan and losing a tough match to Bethany 7-8. Shaley Thomas lost the match of the day as she battled with Kansas Wesleyan’s #5 player winning the first set 6-3, losing a second set tie break 7-5, and losing a thrilling third set 10-8. Seward finished with 9 match wins on the weekend tying them for first in the tournament.
