SEPTEMBER 1 Ė SEPTEMBER 30, 2006

Only one month remains until the start of the Seward County Community College menís and womenís basketball season. Until then, both the Saints and Lady Saints basketball players will prepare for their season openers at the Nov. 2-4 Pepsi Classic, by playing in several pre-season scrimmages in October. Both the Saints and Lady Saints will be making a special one-night preview for the public on Oct. 28, when they host the Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night. The month of September has seen the SCCC volleyball team play 22-of-23 matches on the road. In the month of September, the Lady Saints have played in four classics and two Jayhawk West Conference matches.

The Seward County volleyball team posted an 11-13 overall record last month, and currently are 14-15 overall this season. The Lady Saints split their two Jayhawk West matches against Colby and Cloud County. The Lady Saints dropped their home conference opener against the Colby Lady Trojans, but were able to escape Concordia with a five-game road victory. Seward County is currently in fourth place in the Jayhawk West, and third place in the NJCAA Division I Region VI standings.

SCCC sophomore, Janete Ferreira, was named All-Tournament Team at the Hill College Labor Day Classic and freshman libero, Katy Troutman, continues to be the Lady Saints top defensive players collecting 474 digs this season (4.74/game). Troutmanís dig total ranks her 24th in the nation, and she is already on pace to shatter the Seward County volleyball all-time record for digs in a single-season. After the Lady Saints first 29 matches of the season, Troutman is currently in second place all-time, and trails former Lady Saint All-American, Gabi Carbone, by only 115 digs. Look for Troutman to break the all-time single-season record before the Lady Saints play their final home match of the season against Butler C.C. on Oct. 25.

The menís and womenís tennis teams have been competing against several four-year and junior college programs this fall season. The Saints have posted an overall team record of 67-27, while the Lady Saints have totaled a 38-28 overall record this fall. SCCC freshman, Holly Davis (8-1) and Saints sophomore, Adam Hambleton (9-1) lead their respective teams this fall in singles competition.

The Seward County baseball and softball teams have reached the half-way point of their fall seasons. The Saints will be preparing for the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Sophomore All-Star Showcase next weekend Oct. 6-8, in Wichita, Kan., at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Seward County will be represented on the Jayhawk West Conference All-Star team in the three-game series against the Jayhawk East by sophomores Erik Hegstad, Kai Kirby and Bo Merrell.

The softball team will conclude their fall season with three straight home fall scrimmage dates on Oct. 4, Oct. 13 and Oct. 19. All of the Lady Saints home games are played on the campus of SCCC at Lady Saints Softball Field.
