The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) will host their annual Baseball Sophomore Showcase All-Star Weekend, Oct.6-8, in Wichita, Kan., at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Seward County Community College will have three sophomore players who will represent Seward County and will compete in the Jayhawk West vs. Jayhawk East All-Star Games. Sophomores, Erik Hegstad, Kai Kirby and Bo Merrell will play for the Jayhawk West in two all-star games (seven innings each) on Saturday, Oct. 7 and one (nine inning game) game on Sunday, Oct. 8.

The KJCCC Sophomore All-Star Weekend also includes a showcase for all sophomore players to be evaluated. The showcase for all sophomores will be on Friday, Oct. 6 starting at 12:30 p.m. Covering the showcase will be Major League Baseball scouts, NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA head and assistant coaches.

Seward County will have a total of 11 sophomore players who will be eligible to participate in the showcase on Friday.

Erik Hegstad was the starting right fielder for the Saints in 2006, where he was named Honorable Mention Jayhawk West All-Conference. Hegstad had a breakout season in 2006, playing in 59-of-60 games with a .366 batting average, 39 runs scored, 23 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 49 RBI. Hegstad led the team with 31 extra base hits.

Kai Kirby began his freshman season batting over .500 after the first 11 games of the season. Kirby was the Saints mainstay in center field where he played in 40 games. Kirby completed his freshman year hitting .388 (second on the team) with 28 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, 21 RBI, 18 walks and only 15 strikeouts. Additionally, Kirby tallied a .475 on base percentage.

Bo Merrell was the Saints starting second baseman as a freshman in 2006. Merrell was selected by the San Francisco Giants for the second consecutive season in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft this past June. In 2006, Merrell batted .309 with 36 runs scored, 50 base hits, eight doubles, four triples, two home runs and 30 RBI. Merrell led the Saints stealing 11-of-12 bases last season.
