Although the 4-0 Seward County Saints were matched up with the 0-4 Colby Trojans Monday night, the Saints found out that there just aren’t any off nights in the always tough Jayhawk West Conference schedule as they came out with a 71-57 victory in the Community Building.
After missing the entire conference season last year as a freshman, Latiq Agard has a lot to prove to his fellow Jayhawk West foes. Monday night in Colby, the sophomore showed just why he was a preseason All-American pick as he cashed in on a 9 for 9, 19 point first half to help push the Seward County Saints out to a 43-31 advantage at the break. Agard’s 19 led a solid offensive effort for the Saints in the first half as they shot 53% but were only able to hold Colby, the conferences worst shooting team, to 48% shooting to keep the game close. While Seward’s fire power kept them out in front relatively comfortable the entire game, the Trojans weren’t about to give up on their home floor and cut the Saints lead to as close as 7 late but wouldn’t be able to get any closer as Seward came away with the 14 point win 71-57.
The game was fairly sloppy for both teams as Seward turned it over 24 times and Colby lost possession 22 times in the contest. The Saints struggled shooting the ball from the outside as Tony Smith knocked down all 4 three point makes for Seward while the rest of the team shot a combined 0 for 11 in the game. Latiq Agard led all scorers with 23 points on 10 of 12 shooting, returning to a form in which many Saints fans came accustom to last season. Smith finished the game with 21 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals while Marcus James had a solid night above the rim with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
With the win, Seward has now taken care of their last nine opponents and have a 15-3 overall record with an unblemished 5-0 record in Jayhawk West Conference play. Due to the move of the Colby game from December to Monday night, the Saints now have just one day off before returning to the court to take on Raleigh’s Finest Prep Academy from Oklahoma City on Wednesday at home.
