The Seward County Community College volleyball team opened their Jayhawk West Conference schedule at the Green House against the Colby Community College Lady Trojans on Monday night. SCCC had a commanding lead at 2-1, but fell in the fourth and fifth games to Colby to lose the match 31-29, 23-30, 30-25, 26-30 and 14-16. Colby (9-9 overall) improves to 3-0 in conference and remains in first place in the Jayhawk West. The Lady Trojans have picked up conference wins against Butler, Pratt and now Seward County. The Lady Saints fall to 8-9 overall and to 0-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference.

Seward County won game-one in a strong 31-29 effort with the team collecting 11 kills. Seward County did struggle last night at the service line posting 13 service errors, but made were able to tally 17 total blocks and only one blocking error at the net.

Seward County was led by sophomore outside hitter, Janete Ferreira, who recorded 18 kills, a .300 hitting percentage and also had six digs. Juliana Nascimento was the only Seward County player to have a double/double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Additionally, Nascimento led SCCC with three service aces. Nascimento leads Seward County this season with 30 aces.

The Lady Saints were led defensively by freshmen, Jenny Schwier and Katy Troutman. Schwier posted a team-best 22 digs and added eight kills. Troutman did not have a receiving error all night with a total of 15 digs and also posted two aces. Troutman leads the Lady Saints with 214 digs this season.

Other Lady Saints who got in on the action were Jennifer Noel (six kills, six blocks), Dana McLaren (13 digs) and Alex Droogsma (37 assists).

Seward County will travel this weekend to Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Torrington, Wyoming, to compete in the Wyo-Braska Shootout. Seward County opens tournament competition on Thursday, Sept. 21, against Sheridan College (12:00 p.m.), Casper College (4:00 p.m.) and Laramie County C.C. (8:00 p.m.). The Lady Saints will travel to Torrington on Friday to play Western Wyoming (10:00 a.m.) and Eastern Wyoming (2:00 p.m.). Saturday the shootout concludes with the Lady Saints playing in Scottsbluff against Northeastern Colorado J.C. (11:00 a.m.) and Central Wyoming (1:00 p.m.).
