During the first week of NJCAA regular season play, Seward County freshman middle hitter Sheina Fernandes was named the NJCAA Region VI Player of the Week for her solid contributions to the Lady Saints during their Lamar Invitational Championship. Fernandes led the team with 44 kills while hitting .349 on the weekend while also posting 15 blocks, 17 digs, and 9 aces. The Brazilian star put together a 6 block match against Laramie County in a Friday win followed by an 11 kill match against the Golden Eagles the next morning. She then finished the tournament with a 10 kill 3 block performance against 18th ranked Pratt in Seward’s heartbreaking loss to the Beavers.
This week a different Lady Saints middle hitter was named the NJCAA Region VI Player of the Week as LaKendra Sanders dominated the competition at the Redlands Classic this weekend to help Seward County to the crown. Sanders went off Friday against a pair of top 25 teams from the Lonestar State as she started with a 14 kill match against 22nd ranked Tyler and immediately followed that with a 12 kill 9 block outing against 23rd ranked Hill College, both culminating in Seward County wins. She finished the tournament as strong as she started it by putting up 7 kills without committing an error against Jayhawk East opponent Independence in the Lady Saints final game of the tournament.
Fernandes and Sanders will next see action tomorrow night in their 2009 home opener against Garden City to open up Jayhawk West Conference play at 6:30.
