The Seward County Community College volleyball team rebounded after an 0-4 start in the Salt Lake City Tournament, with a perfect 3-0 day on Saturday to win the consolation bracket. Seward County defeated Pierce College (30-24, 20-30, 30-26, 30-25), Mt. Hood Community College (30-19, 31-29, 22-30, 30-28) and College of Eastern Utah (34-32, 27-30, 23-30, 30-20, 15-8) to win the consolation bracket finals. The No. 15 ranked Lady Saints improve to 8-8 overall this season and will open their Jayhawk West Conference schedule next Monday against Colby C.C. at the Green House.

Juliana Nascimento was named to the All-Tournament team after recording 38 kills, 39 digs, three service aces and a .370 hitting percentage (38 kills- 8 errors- 81 attempts) in seven tournament matches.

To start single elimination bracket play, Seward County knocked off Pierce College (CA) to advance to the consolation bracket semi-finals. Sophomore, Janete Ferreira led the team with 21 kills, setter, Alex Droogsma, totaled 52 assists and Katy Troutman led the team with 21 digs. Freshman, Jenny Schwier posted her second career double/double with 15 kills and 11 digs.

Seward County kept marching towards the finals with a four-game match victory against Mt. Hood C.C. Schwier recorded another double/double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Droogsma led the team with 41 assists and Troutman led the Lady Saints with a career-high 27 digs. Freshman middle blocker, Jennifer Noel, tied a career-high with 10 kills. Nascimento had an all-around solid game with seven kills, 11 digs and four aces.

In the consolation bracket finals, Seward County received a strong performance from several players to win their third straight match on Saturday afternoon. Nascimento tied her career-high for kills with 19, and was one-of-seven Seward County players who recorded double figures in digs (14). Schwier picked up her third double/double of the tournament with 11 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Troutman posted double-figures in digs for her sixth match of the tournament with 17, and sophomore defensive specialist, Dana McLaren posted a season-high 11 digs. Ferreira had 15 kills and 10 digs for her first double/double of the season. In addition, freshman Trisha Keahey had a career-high 11 digs and Droogsma had another fine performance with 50 assists.

On Friday, Seward County opened tournament play with a 20-30 and 26-30 loss against Central Wyoming. Schwier posted eight kills (.300 hitting %), Droogsma notched 24 assists (12/game) and Troutman picked up 15 digs in the losing effort.

The following match the Lady Saints found themselves in a battle with Mt. Hood Community College. Seward dropped game-one 30-28, but then picked up game-two 30-28, before dropping the third and final game 15-12. Sophomore right side hitter, Juliana Nascimento led the team with 13 kills (.571 hitting %) and completed a double/double with 12 digs. Troutman led SCCC with 14 digs and Droogsma led all players with 31 assists.

The main match-up in day-one was when No. 15 Seward County played No. 6 Salt Lake City C.C. The Lady Saints dropped game-one 30-22, but dominated game-two 30-17 before dropping the third game 15-10. Nascimento recorded a team-high nine kills, while Troutman led the team with 13 digs and Droogsma collected 22 assists.

In the final match on Friday, Seward County lost to Arizona Western in two games (30-17, 30-23). Ferreira led the team with nine kills and Noel posted the highest hitting percentage of the match with a .429 kill percentage. Schwier led the team with 16 digs and Droogsma tallied 20 assists.

The Lady Saints will be in next on Monday, September 18 at the Green House as they open their Jayhawk West Conference season hosting Colby Community College (2-5 overall) at 6:30 p.m. Admission is FREE to all Lady Saints home matches.
