Coming into Wednesday’s conference opener against Garden City, the Seward County Lady Saints Softball Team had split every single double header that they had played this season, losing the opening game in the last four. Wednesday at Lady Saints softball field, things would change… well kind of. Seward pounded Garden City starter Taylor Cange early and often as they beat out 15 hits in the game. Two first inning hits and three in the second, including a 2 RBI single from leadoff hitter Alicia Reyes gave the Lady Saints the early 4-0 advantage. They would later tack on three runs in the 4th as consecutive RBI hits from Marisa Coats, Brianna Baron, and Sahara Howard extended the lead to 7-0. After Garden scored three fifth inning runs against Seward County starter Courtney Auger, the Lady Saints bounced back to the tune of four bottom of the 5th runs highlighted by a Jamie Gilbert 2 RBI single, her third hit and third RBI of the game, and a single up the middle by Howard to force the game to be called due to the 8 run rule at 11-3. Unfortunately the Lady Saints couldn’t have saved some of those unneeded first game runs for the second game as Garden scored in the first inning after a leadoff error on the Lady Saints and then tacked on two more runs in the second to open the lead to 3-0. Seward starter Cara Russell cruised through the middle innings but three unearned Lady ‘Buster runs put the game out of reach at 6-0 in the 7th. Seward’s best chance to score came in the 4th when they had two runners on and no outs but a fielders choice and a line drive double play later the Lady Saints were out of the inning with no runs crossing the plate. Seward County is now 8-8 overall and 1-1 in Jayhawk West Conference Play. They will head to Pratt this weekend for tournament play with their first pitch scheduled for 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
