Saturday night in a big cross-division Jayhawk Conference matchup, the Seward County C.C. Saints proved that they can play whatever kind of basketball that you want them to in a defensive laden 64-53 win against Independence. The Saints, averaging 110 points a game through their first seven games of the season held a talented Independence team to just 32% shooting and a season low 53 points in the win. Just a week earlier the Saints and Pirates played to a 93-87 overtime game in Seward County’s Wendy’s Classic.
Saturday night the Saints got the services of point guard Tony Smith back after missing Friday night’s contest for precautionary measures with a nagging injury issue and Smith showed that he hadn’t missed a step scoring 13 points, dishing out 6 assists, picking up 5 steals, and grabbing 4 rebounds in 38 minutes of work on the evening. Latiq Agard continued to be a force for the Saints in the paint as he connected on 8 of 12 shooting to give himself a team high 21 points while blocking 3 shots and snatching down 4 rebounds. Thijin Moses had an uncharacteristically off shooting night but still managed to chip in 7 points to go along with a team high 5 rebounds and sent 2 Pirate shots back to their originator. Drew Jones gave coach Bryan Zollinger 26 quality minutes scoring 8 points on 3 of 6 shooting and picking up 3 steals on the defensive end. The Saints were outrebounded 45 to 27 on the evening but took advantage of 20 Pirate turnovers and 13 steals to secure the 11 point victory.
Friday night pitted Seward County against Jayhawk East foe Labette, a game in which the Saints controlled for the entire 40 minutes. Seward got off to a fast start and never trailed the Cardinals on the night as they took a 50-29 lead into the half before opening up a 81-43 game late in the game, and finally finishing off Labette 92-60 at the final horn. Latiq Agard scored 26 points and ripped down a team high 9 rebounds while Thijin Moses connected on 5 of 9 three point attempts and 6 of 11 overall to notch 19 points with 8 rebounds. Drew Jones scored 12 and hit both of his three points attempts and Thiago Oliveira and Jon Tassin grabbed six rebounds apiece to go along with their 9 and 8 points respectively.
The 8-0 Saints will now take Turkey week to prepare for the Garden City Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday where they will square off against 8-1 Frank Phillips on Friday and 10-0 New Mexico Junior College on Saturday, both at 4:00 p.m.
