With the 2009 tennis season in the foreseeable future, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has released their season opening rankings that include nine individual Saints and Lady Saints players and four different Seward County teams in the nation’s top 100. Along with the individual honors, both the Men’s and Women’s teams were ranked in the top 12.

The Lady Saints will open their season as the #12 ranked team in the country after a 16th place finish last year in the National Tournament. The Lady Saints top ranked individual player is Mariana Matias who is currently slotted as the 37th best player in the nation. Fabiola Wisnesky checks in at #45 and Valerie Stevens ranks 64th after coming off of a fall in which she went 8-2. The doubles combination of Matias and Wisnesky have been tabbed as the #20 doubles team in the country while Stevens and Antigone Lowery have been placed 36th.

The Saints Men’s team looks to return to the national tournament this season and will start the season as the #11 ranked team in all the land. The Saints will be led by Diego Abreu and Krittanu Puthong who have been chosen as the 31st and 34th top players respectively. Carlos Souza slides in at #48 while Ivan Michelli is ranked 60th. Fernando Soni and Christian Romanzini round out the ranked Saints this season in the singles division with Soni as #91 and Romanzini at #95. On the doubles side of things Puthong and Abreu cracked the top 30 at #29 while Michelli and Souza come in right behind them at #34.

“Our depth this season should be our strength” coach Darin Workman said. “You can see by the rankings that we are going to be pretty solid up and down this year and hopefully that will lead to success and our eventual goal of making it to the National Tournament from both the men’s and women’s side.”

The Saints and Lady Saints will officially open the 2009 spring season February 27th and 28th in the Santa Fe, New Mexico Tournament.
