After rolling over their first two opponents with a combination of hardnosed defense and big time offense, the #17 Seward County Lady Saints found themselves shooting at a basket with a lid on it Saturday night at the Mineral Area Classic. Shooting just 29% from the field against the host school, Mineral Area College, the Lady Saints had two golden opportunities to tie the game with under a minute left but were unable to capitalize on either one and eventually came out on the bad end of a 56-50 decision. Seward had just one player in double figures, Megan Lassley, who had 15, and managed 18 field goals on the night. Amanda Pierson paced the Lady Saints with 14 rebounds while Lassley and LaNell Taylor led Seward with 3 assists each. The Lady Saints got back to their winning ways on Sunday afternoon in a more characteristic 89-50 win against Crowder College. Seward County came out ready to avenge the loss earlier in the weekend and put it to the Lady ‘Riders to the tune of a 49-22 halftime lead. LaNell Taylor drained five 3-point shots en route to a 19 point performance while Amanda Pierson recorded a double-double with 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting and 10 rebounds on the contest. Sundays affair was more typical of the Lady Saints defensive attack as the held Crowder to 32% shooting and just 1 of 14 from beyond the arc. Seward County notched 29 steals including 8 by Rachel Barnes and 6 by Shelia Washington, and forced Crowder into 44 turnovers in the game. Next up for the Lady Saints is the Wendy’s Classic where they will battle Clarendon College Friday night and Frank Phillips on Saturday, both games will begin at 6:00 p.m. Get your free tickets for the weekends tournament at the Wendy’s location in Liberal.
