Facing their last ever Jayhawk West Conference match in their home away from home, the Greenhouse, five Lady Saint Volleyball sophomores put on t heir best performance of the year in a three set sweep of Barton County on Wednesday night. Seward County came out fired up and jumped to an early lead on way to a 25-17 opening set win followed by another relatively easy 25-16 win in the second set. The third set the Lady Saints found themselves in a 24-21 hole before fighting off three straight game points and ending up coming back to win 29-27 on Jelena Simic’s 18th kill and Chelsea Myers 47th assist of the evening.

Simic, SCCC’s All-Time leader in career kills had her sharpest match of the year recording a hitting percentage of .556 on her 18 kills while also chipping in on defense with 11 digs. Fellow sophomore Chelsea Myers also saw one of her finest matches to date converting on 47 of 93 set attempts to record a season high .505 set conversion percentage. Myers also led the Lady Saints defensive attack recording 14 digs. Jenna Ginest continued her quality play in the middle for the Lady Saints finishing off eight kills and tallying two blocks. Ami Wang recorded four kills without making an error and also picked up four digs defensively in the process. Haley Crosier gave the Lady Saints an extra look on defense and recorded a key dig in the third set. Freshman Lindsey Miller and LaKendra Sanders showed they are ready to take the reins next year when this year’s 2009 class leaves, as Miller turned in her best performance as a collegiate with 16 kills and a .364 hitting percentage while continuing to be a force on the defensive side of the ball with eight digs. Sanders slammed down eight kills and recorded two solo blocks at the net. Libero Amanda Savage sustained her consistent play for the Lady Saints notching 10 digs and going a perfect 16 for 16 on serve-receive passing.

The Lady Saints as well as the rest of the Jayhawk Conference have locked themselves into playoff positioning with one game to go as Seward County will head into the Region VI Playoffs as the #2 seed and will face #7 Garden City in a play-in match on Tuesday, November 4 at 6:30 in the Greenhouse. The Lady Saints playoff match will be a “black out” match in which all fans in attendance are asked to wear black to support their Lady Saints run to the Region VI crown.
