The NJCAA Division I All-Region VI softball team selections were recently announced, and the Seward County Community College Lady Saints were well represented with six players receiving recognition. Jennifer Collins (First Base), Alicia Gonzales (Outfield), Melissa St. Clair (Catcher) and Courtney Auger (Pitcher) were all named to the first team while Lindsay Garchinski (Third Base) and Jamie Gilbert (Outfield) were selected to the second team. The Lady Saints were the only team with two First Team selections. Seward County has now had 49 All-Region VI picks in the program’s 10-year history.

Collins, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Coquitlam, British Columbia, broke the all-time Seward County single-season batting average record (.481) this season, and her career average (.451) is also an all-time best. She had a banner season with 87 base hits, 23 doubles, nine home runs, 62 RBI and only posted eight strikeouts in 181 at-bats.

Collins broke Seward County records for career base hits (157), career doubles (38), career RBIs (110) and single-season base hits (87).

Gonzales transferred to SCCC at the start of the spring semester and finished second on the team batting .431 during her freshman season. The Thornton, Colo. native scored 39 runs and posted eight doubles, three triples and 35 RBI while playing left field.

St. Clair received an All-Region selection for the second straight year behind the plate for SCCC. A Garden City High School product, St. Clair finished her Lady Saint career in eight single-season and career record books. St. Clair’s career statistics include a .353 batting average, 125 base hits, 87 runs scored, 28 doubles, 10 home runs and 93 RBI. She caught 112 games in two seasons while posting only three errors with 590 putouts and 36 assists.

Auger, the Jayhawk West M.V.P. and Freshman of the Year, set a Seward County career and single-season record with 293 strikeouts and a 1.54 earned run average. Auger, a 5-foot-8 right-hander, went 21-9 with 28 complete games and 10 shutouts. She pitched in 34 games while logging 186.2 innings in the circle. She becomes only the second freshman pitcher at Seward County to earn First Team All-Region VI honors (Sarah Wittwer – 2005).

Lindsay Garchinski, a sophomore from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, made the transition to the infield after starting in the Lady Saints’ outfield as a freshman. She batted .411 with 56 runs scored, 74 base hits, 18 doubles, seven home runs and 51 RBI. Her 74 base hits rank third all-time in SCCC single-season history. Overall, Garchinski ranks in 15 all-time Seward County single-season or career statistical record books.

Gilbert, a freshman from Liberal, received Second Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region VI honors this season. She was third on the team collecting 71 base hits, and she posted 56 runs scored, a .376 batting average, two triples, 22 RBI and led the team with 18 stolen bases.
