The National Junior College Athletic Association announced today that Seward County Community College softball player Jennifer Collins has been named the RINGOR NJCAA Division I Softball Co-Player of the Week. It is the second time this season and third time during Collins’ career that she has received national player of the week recognition. Collins, a 5-foot-8 sophomore first baseman from Coquitlam, B.C., led Seward County to eight victories last week, including seven wins by run-rule, while batting .577 (15-for-26) with 12 runs scored, three doubles, six home runs and 19 RBI. Collins shares this week’s honor with outfielder Toni Dance, from Iowa Western Community College, who batted .552 and continued her current 24-game hitting streak.

Collins also received NJCAA Player of the Week on April 9, and last season she was named Player of the Week on April 4. Overall, the Seward County softball program has had 13 NJCAA Player/Pitcher of the Week selections.

Collins helped lead the Lady Saints to doubleheader sweeps against Dodge City C.C. and Barton County C.C. before taking a four-game series from Neosho County C.C. Collins began the week going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI against Dodge City. She later collected four base hits, including three doubles and a home run, and added five RBI in a road doubleheader against the Lady Cougars in Great Bend.

She capped off the week with four home runs in consecutive games against Neosho County C.C. in her final home four-game series of her SCCC career. On Saturday, Collins was 6-for-7 with four runs, two home runs and seven RBI. She finished the week with four RBI and two homers in back-to-back five-inning run-rule wins against the Lady Panthers.

Collins, a NJCAA Pre-Season All-American, is currently among the NJCAA leaders in batting average (.491, 24th), doubles (23, tied for 6th), RBI (61, tied for 21st) and base hits (83, tied for 20th).

Perhaps her most remarkable statistic is that she currently has more home runs (9) than strikeouts (7) in 169 at-bats this season.
