Seward County Community College sophomore Erica Herrera won a Region VI Tournament championship at No. 5 singles leading the Lady Saints tennis team to a second-place finish at the Region VI Tournament last weekend in Wichita. The Lady Saints will now prepare for their third straight trip to the NJCAA Tournament, May 3-9, in Tucson, Ariz. Barton County Community College won the tournament with 22.5 points. Behind Seward County (16 points) was third-place Johnson County Community College (14.5 points), Cowley College (13.5 points) and Hutchinson Community College (0 points). Freshmen Valerie Stevens and Alyssa Larson picked up runner-up finishes in No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. SCCC completed the tournament with a 10-10 overall record, including a 7-6 record in singles and 3-4 mark in doubles play. Seward County is now 50-49 overall this season.

It is the second straight year that the Lady Saints have finished second at the Region VI Tournament. Seward County will make another appearance at the NJCAA Tournament after finishing 10th in 2006 and 14th a year ago.

Herrera, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, earned the No. 5 singles championship with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hutchinson and a 6-2, 6-3 win against Barton County in the title match. Herrera also competed in the championship match last season at the Region VI tourney with a runner-up finish in No. 4 singles.

Stevens improved to 6-5 on the season in singles play with a 1-1 record last weekend. She defeated Cowley College (6-1, 6-0) before losing to Barton County (3-6, 1-6) in the championship match.

Larson continued her successful freshman campaign with a runner-up finish in No. 6 singles. Larson is now 7-4 on the season after a victory against Cowley College and a loss to Johnson County C.C.

Seward County finished runner-up in both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Larson and Stevens won their first match over Johnson County (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) before falling to Barton County (6-7, 1-6) in the title match of No. 2 doubles play. Sophomore Sanela Dejanovic and Herrera teamed at No. 3 doubles where they defeated Johnson County (6-2, 7-6) and lost to Barton County (3-6, 2-6).
