The Seward County Community College men’s tennis team ended its season on Saturday afternoon with a fourth-place finish in the Region VI Tournament in Wichita. The top three teams advance to the NJCAA Tournament, May 11-16, in Plano, Texas. Barton County won the Region VI Tournament with 21.5 team points. Also earning a berth at the national tournament is second-place Johnson County Community College (18.5 points) and third-place Cowley College (16 points). The Saints (10.5 points) finished ahead of Hutchinson, who did not record a team point in tournament play. Seward County finished with a 10-14 record at the tournament, including a 7-9 singles record and 3-5 doubles mark. The Saints overall record on the season was 57-61.

The Saints had three players finish in third-place in singles competition. Sophomore No. 1 singles player Mirko Perkusich defeated Hutchinson (6-1, 6-2) and Barton County (def.), but was defeated by Cowley College (0-6, 4-6). Sophomore No. 3 singles player Roberto Gomez finished third for the second straight year with victories against Hutchinson (6-0, 6-0) and Cowley (4-6, 6-7).

Seward County freshman Ivan Michelli also notched a third-place finish with a 6-5, 6-1 victory against Johnson County and with a loss against Barton County (1-6, 3-6).

The top performance for the Saints in doubles competition came from the No. 3 duo of Charlie Salter and Michael Pettus, as they finished third with two wins against Hutchinson (6-0, 6-0) and Cowley College (6-4, 6-3) and a loss against Barton County (0-6, 6-7).

Seward County finishes its season with the program’s 10th straight year ranking in the Top 25 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll with a No. 8 ranking. The Saints will not make a third straight trip to the NJCAA Tournament, after finishing in ninth-place the past two seasons.
