The No. 8 nationally-ranked Seward County Community College men’s tennis team had little trouble defeating Hutchinson Community College 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the HCC Tennis Courts. In all matches outside of No. 1 singles, the Saints defeated the Blue Dragons by a combined score of 84-2. The Saints used straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victories from Victor Mesquita, Roberto Gomez, Luis Cabizuca and Michael Pettus in singles play, and two straight 8-0 victories from Cabizuca and Caio Rodrigues and Charlie Salter and Pettus in doubles competition to cruise past the Dragons. Seward County improves to 32-26 overall in total matches played this season.

The Saints No. 1 doubles pair, Mirko Perkusich and Mesquita, defeated Hutchinson’s top duo 8-1, while Seward County posted a 24-1 overall score in doubles play.

Hutchinson’s No. 1 singles player Spencer Pozek was competitive against Perkusich in singles play, as Perkusich knocked off Pozek 7-5, 6-3.

Salter won his second straight singles match defeating Zach Bradrick 6-0, 6-1 in No. 5 singles competition. Mesquita entered the season ranked No. 53 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, and is currently 2-2 in singles play this season. He picked up his straight-sets victory on Tuesday over Derek Ohl in No. 2 singles play.

The next competition for the Saints will be at the Seminole State Festival in Oklahoma City on April 4-5. The Saints will face four nationally-ranked opponents, including No. 1 (D-III) Eastfield Community College, No. 4 Collin County Community College, No. 7 Seminole State College and No. 10 University of Arkansas – Fort Smith.
