Freshman Courtney Auger threw a one-hit shutout to lead the Seward County Community College softball team to a 2-0 game-one victory over Hutchinson Community College on Tuesday afternoon at Lady Saints Softball Field in Liberal. Hutchinson defeated SCCC in game two, 9-3, as they tallied 17 base hits in the seven inning contest to split the Jayhawk West doubleheader. The Hutchinson victory snapped Seward County’s seven-game winning streak, and it was HCC’s first victory over the Lady Saints in over three seasons, breaking the Lady Saints’ seven-game streak over the Lady Dragons. Seward County is now 21-14 overall, 7-1 in the Jayhawk West and they remain 11-1 in Division I Region VI play. Hutchinson is now 18-11 overall and 5-5 in league play.

Auger continued her success in the circle with her third straight complete-game shutout. The freshman entered the doubleheader second in the NJCAA in strikeouts (183), and was able to strikeout seven HCC batters, with one strikeout in all seven innings.

Auger had a perfect game intact until issuing a walk in the fourth inning with one out, and she lost her no-hit bid in the sixth inning with two outs as Hutchinson center fielder Jessica Glenn recorded the only hit against Auger. Auger owns a 13-6 record with a 1.46 earned run average in 124.2 innings pitched. She has recorded six shutouts and has pitched 18 complete games in 18 starts in the circle this season.

Freshman shortstop Tasia McEntire drove in Jennifer Collins (single) with a two-out RBI single in the third inning, giving the Lady Saints their 2-0 lead.

Gilbert went 2-for-3 with a run scored and McEntire went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

In game two, Hutchinson scored six of its nine runs in the first as the Lady Blue Dragons posted eight base hits in the inning. The Lady Saints’ offense started game two strong scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Hutchinson relief pitcher Courtney Johnson held SCCC scoreless in 6.2 innings of relief.

Sophomore Lindsay Garchinski hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season, with a two-run shot in the first inning. Sophomore first baseman Jennifer Collins also scored in the first inning after reaching base on a single to center field.
