The Seward County Community College women’s tennis team went on the road and defeated No. 7 nationally-ranked Cowley College, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in Arkansas City, Kan. Four singles players collected victories and the Lady Saints won 2-of-3 matches in doubles competition. It is the second junior college dual that Seward County has won and the third overall match win for SCCC this year. Freshmen Valerie Stevens and Alyssa Larson each posted wins in singles play and together at No. 2 doubles. Seward County is now 21-22 overall this season in total games played.

After Cowley picked up victories in both No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles, the No. 17 ranked Lady Saints bounced back with Juliana Boas defeating Monica Medina (6-4, 6-3) in No. 3 singles. Stevens dominated her No. 4 singles match earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Thea Lonewolf, and Larson was equally impressive in No. 6 singles picking up a 6-0, 6-2 win against Cassie Powell.

Sophomore Erica Herrera completed the sweep for the Lady Saints bottom four singles players with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Elizabeth Galindo in No. 5 singles play. Herrera has now won 28 singles matches in her two-year career at Seward County.

Stevens and Larson notched the No. 2 doubles victory with an 8-5 advantage over Medina and Lonewolf. Sophomore Sanela Dejanovic and Herrera teamed at No. 3 doubles and also came away with an 8-5 victory to seal the team win for the Lady Saints.

The Lady Saints will travel to Hutchinson Community College on Tuesday, April 1, taking on the Lady Blue Dragons at 1 p.m. at the HCC Tennis Courts.
