In their first real test of the 2012 season, the Seward County Lady Saints passed two of three phases in their games against the Otero Lady Rattlers. They pitched well, hit good enough to win, but their defense was shaky at best as they were able to come away with a 2-1 game one win behind the pitching of Blaire Taylor, but fell 7-5 in game two as they committed 4 errors and allowed Otero three unearned runs.

January seems light years ago for the #13 Seward County Saints after Saturday night’s 75-55 win over rival Garden City on their home floor. Seward struggled against the Busters in their first matchup, losing a rare home game, but the Saints dominated Garden from the opening tip Saturday to blow the Busters out of the water in the tune of a 75-55 victory to get within one game of another Jayhawk West Conference Championship.

It was a game to forget for the Seward County Lady Saints Saturday night in the Perryman Center in Garden City. After going down by seven before the half, Seward could not find an answer for the Lady Busters in the final 20 minutes as Garden City scored 56 second half points en route to a blowout 88-68 loss to push the Lady Saints out of the #2 spot in the Jayhawk West.

The 13th ranked Seward County Saints flexed their muscles Wednesday night as they hosted Jayhawk West rival Dodge City. After their recent home struggles, Seward was going to have none of that in this one as they bolted out to a double digit halftime lead before turning on the afterburners to run away with a 23 point win to remain the top team in the conference with just three games to go.

Decked out in their finest pink gear for their annual “Think Pink” night, the Seward County Lady Saints connected on 14 three pointers Wednesday night in the Greenhouse to run away with an 84-35 win over Dodge City to clinch home court advantage in the first round of the Region VI Tournament. Seward closed the first half on a 21-2 run to take a 42-18 halftime lead and put up nearly the identical score in the second half to come away with the 49 point win.

The reigning Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year Jake Barrios started off his 2012 campaign where he left off in 2011 as the sophomore shortstop hit in all 7 of the Saints games last week, posting a .417 batting average while playing sparkling defense at shortstop handling 27 chances without an error to open the year.

The Seward County Lady Saints moved to 4-0 on the early season Tuesday afternoon in Pratt as they defeated the Lady Beavers 6-5 and 10-2 to sweep a double header from Pratt for the second time in as many weeks. Game one was a little dicey for Seward early as they fell behind 2-0 after 3 innings before tying it in the 5th and taking the lead in the 6th for good and then hung on late to win 6-5. Game two saw the Lady Saints storm out to an early lead and never look back as a pair of late home runs made the score look a little bit prettier as they went on to the 10-2 victory.

On a beautiful Pancake Day afternoon Tuesday at Brent Gould Field, the Seward County Saints hosted the Lamar Runnin’ Lopes in a modified double header in which they continued their suspended game from February 2nd that was tied 2-2 in the 8th inning, and played a nine inning game following that to see which of the two powerful teams would have early season bragging rights. Lamar made short work of the back end of the suspended game with a two run home run with two outs in the 9th to take that game 4-2 and the Lopes completed the sweep in the second game as they erased a 5-2 Saints lead in the 6th inning to come away with a 7-5 win.

With their two scheduled games against Northeastern getting wiped off the board Wednesday due to weather conditions, the #14 Seward County Saints series with the Plainsmen ends in a two game sweep after Seward took game one of the series 5-2 and backed that up with a 4-2 win in game two on Tuesday.

The Seward County Lady Saints got their 2012 softball season underway on Tuesday afternoon at Lady Saints Field, drawing the Pratt Lady Beavers for their opening games. Seward fell behind early in game one before coming back to win 4-2 and took control from the start in game two and held on to win 3-1.

It wasn’t exactly pretty, but after #11 Seward County’s recent rare home struggles, the Lady Saints will take it as they took care of Pratt 70-57 on Homecoming night in the Greenhouse to earn their 20th win of the season. The Seward offense once again sputtered early on and the Lady Saints found themselves in a hole before regaining their traction to take a 33-26 halftime lead. Pratt looked like they were dribbling a greased pig in the second half against the pressuring Seward defense and their turnovers mounted before coming to rest at 34 to help the Lady Saints come away with the 13 point win.

With 1st place Seward County and 9th place Pratt locking up on Homecoming night in the Greenhouse Saturday night, it wasn’t expected to be much of a game. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, the Saints had a dogfight on their hands with the Beavers and after a big early run for Pratt, they led throughout before Seward broke through in the final minute to come away with a heart stopping 58-55 win.

The #11 Seward County Lady Saints got back to their winning ways Wednesday night in Colby as they headed to the Community Building in Northwest Kansas and came home with a 64-44 victory to earn their 19th win of the season. Seward grabbed the early lead and took a 29-22 lead into the half. The Lady Saints defense continued to be stiff in the second half and Colby struggled to score as the Lady Saints lead swelled before Seward eventually cruised to a 64-44 win.

With 1st place in the Jayhawk West Conference on the line Wednesday night in the Community Building in Colby, the #15 Seward County Saints took care of business, withstanding an early barrage from the home Trojans to take a one point lead at the half, before going up big in the second half, just to have to hold on 74-69 to earn their 20th victory of the season.

On the heels of three straight subpar performances, Seward County fans weren’t quite sure to expect as the #12 Saints ran up against #9 Barton in a battle for 1st place to kick off the second half of Jayhawk West Conference play on Saturday night in the Greenhouse. The Saints proved early that they were up for the challenge, taking a double digit lead into the half before putting together a number of highlight reel clips in the second half to run away with a 77-59 win over the Cougars.

The Seward County Lady Saints were hoping that the past was behind them as they tipped off the second half of conference play Saturday night at home against a struggling Barton team. Seward, who was coming off a tough loss to #2 Hutchinson on Wednesday, thought that their date with the 13-9, 3-5 Lady Cougars could get them back on track. That couldn’t have been more wrong. After a good start, the Lady Saints seemed to have a lid on their basket the rest of the night as their lead slipped away before Barton took control in the second half to come away with a 62-57 win to stun the Seward faithful.
