The Seward County Community College womenís basketball team will open its season Friday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. hosting Odessa College at the Green House, for the start of the Pepsi Classic in Liberal. It will be a rematch of the 2007 NJCAA National Tournament Final Four game between Seward County Community College and Odessa College in both teamsí first game of the 2007-2008 regular season. Odessa finished last season as the NJCAA National Champions, and this year Seward County begins the season ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Pre-Season poll. The most obvious difference with these two teams from a year ago will be that 11 of the 16 players who played in that national tournament semifinal game will not be in uniform for either team.

The Seward County Community College menís basketball team will start its 2007-2008 regular season on Thursday night hosting the Pepsi Classic at the Green House in Liberal. Saintsí first-year head coach Bryan Zollinger and his squad will take the court for the first time against Sterling College J.V. at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. This weekend the Saints will also host Carl Albert State College at 8 p.m. on Friday and Garden City Community College at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The Saints return five sophomores from last season and the program has welcomed six newcomers to the roster this season.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team defeated Cloud County Community College 30-26, 30-24, 30-16 on Tuesday night in the NJCAA D-I Region VI Play-In-Match at the Green House in Liberal. The Lady Saints, seeded No. 3 in the Region VI bracket, won their 18th consecutive match against the No. 6 seeded Lady T-Birds dating back to 1999. Seward County advances to this weekendís Region VI Tournament to face No. 2 seed Hutchinson Community College at 3 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Lady Saints improve to 29-13 overall this season and Cloud County finishes their 2007 season with a 10-23 overall mark.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) officials announced the Jayhawk West All-Conference team today and Seward County Community College freshman Dan Yang received Conference Most Valuable Player, Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference recognition. Jayhawk West head coaches voted Yang, a 6-foot-2-inch outside hitter, as the top player in the conference after she led the conference in kills and kills per game. Seward County freshman outside hitter Jelena Simic was also named First Team All-Conference, sophomore setter Alex Droogsma was named Second Team All-Conference and sophomore libero Katy Troutman was named Honorable Mention. Yang and Simic were the only freshmen in the Jayhawk West selected to the First Team.

The Seward County Community College menís and womenís basketball teams will host the Pepsi Classic Nov. 1-3, at the Green House in Liberal. The Saints will play at 8 p.m. on all three nights and the Lady Saints will play at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.

For the third time this season, Seward County Community College sophomore volleyball players Alex Droogsma and Katy Troutman have been named the NJCAA Volleyball Setter and Libero of the Week, respectively. Droogsma previously was named national setter of the week on Oct. 10 and Oct. 3, while Troutman earned national libero of the week recognition on Oct. 10 and Sept. 19. The pair led the Lady Saints to three victories last week against State Fair College (3-1), Wallace State Community College- Hanceville (3-2) and Lake Land College (3-2). Overall this season, the Seward County volleyball program has had seven NJCAA Player of the Week selections.

The Seward County Community College athletic department has announced that the 2007 Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night raised $500 that will be donated to the Greensburg Relief Fund. SCCC basketball fans gathered at the Green House on Thursday, Oct. 25, to watch the Saints and Lady Saints basketball teams in action, along with contests, competitions, performances and team scrimmages throughout the night.

The scenario was set prior to the first serve, if Barton County won it would be their first Jayhawk West Conference crown since 2003. If the Seward County Lady Saints volleyball team could pull off the upset, they would earn a share of the conference title. Two hours later, the Lady Saints were looking at what would have been their biggest victory of the season, just as the No. 7 Lady Cougars came roaring back, down 14-12 in the fifth game, to score four straight points to win the match on their home court at the Barton County Gym. Seward County secured third-place in the Jayhawk West and NJCAA D-I Region VI despite the 30-28, 17-30, 15-30, 30-15, 14-16, loss last night on the road in Great Bend. The Lady Saints finish the regular season 28-13 overall, 6-2 in the Jayhawk West and 3-2 in the NJCAA D-I Region VI.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team finished the Missouri State University- West Plains Tournament on Saturday with a pair of five-game match victories against Wallace State Community College- Hanceville (30-13, 29-31, 28-30, 30-26, 15-12) and Lake Land College (34-32, 28-30, 30-21, 25-30, 15-10). The Lady Saints finished the two-day tournament with a 3-1 record and improved to 28-12 overall this season. Three Seward County players were named to the All-Tournament Team including, outside hitter Jelena Simic, outside hitter Dan Yang and setter Alex Droogsma. Seward County is now 4-0 this season in five-game matches and 14-2 in matches played on a neutral court.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team snapped a season-long four match losing streak with a 30-25, 30-20, 28-30, 30-22 victory over State Fair College, in the Lady Saints first match at the Missouri State University-West Plains Tournament in West Plains, Mo. In the second match on Friday, Seward County was upended by No. 14 MSU-West Plains 27-30, 12-30, 25-30. The Lady Saints are now 1-7 against Top 20 nationally-ranked opponents this season and currently stand 26-12 overall. Since starting the season 24-5, Seward County has posted a 2-7 record during their last nine matches overall.

For the first time in the 32 year history of the Seward County Community College womenís basketball program, the Lady Saints have been named the National Junior College Athletic Association Pre-Season No. 1 team in the nation. The NJCAA announced today that the Lady Saints were ranked the pre-season No. 1 team following their 36-2 overall record, third-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament and No. 2 final NJCAA Top 25 ranking in 2006-2007. The NJCAA also announced its Pre-Season All-America team, and Seward County sophomore Tegan Cunningham was named a First Team Pre-Season All-American. Cunningham, a sophomore from Doncaster, VC, Australia, was named a First Team NJCAA & WBCA All-American last season.

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) held its annual pre-season basketball coaches press conference in Wichita this morning. The pre-season coaches poll was released and the Seward County Community College menís basketball team received a No. 6 ranking. The Saints are under the guidance of first year head coach Bryan Zollinger, a former player and coach at SCCC, who will take the reigns of a Saintsí program that has finished in the top two of the conference in seven of the last 10 years. Zollinger comes to SCCC after spending 10 seasons as the head menís basketball coach at College of Eastern Utah.

The Jayhawk West womenís basketball coaches picked the Seward County Community College Lady Saints as the No. 1 team in the pre-season poll. Seward County is coming off a 36-2 season, where they won the Jayhawk West Conference, NJCAA Region VI Tournament and finished 3rd at the NJCAA National Tournament. The Lady Saints won the Jayhawk West with a 15-1 conference record last season. Head coach Toby Wynn has recorded a 61-9 overall record in his first two seasons as head coach.

Seward County Community College lost its final two matches of the SCCC Invitational volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Green House in Liberal. The No. 15 ranked Lady Saints were defeated by Midland College 24-30 and 27-30 in their final pool-play match, and then were knocked off by No. 14 Hutchinson Community College 26-30, 30-28, 10-15 in the 7th place match of the tournament. Seward Countyís struggles continued on Saturday, and have now lost six of their last seven matches overall. Seward County drops to 25-11 this season and remains 6-1 in Jayhawk West Conference play.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team struggled during the opening day of the SCCC Invitational with two straight losses against No. 17 Northeastern Colorado Junior College (29-31, 28-30) and Arizona Western College (17-30, 25-30). The No. 15 nationally-ranked Lady Saints played a competitive match against the Plainswomen from NJC, but were not able to take either game in their opening match on Friday. Arizona Western collected their second win of the Invitational in the late match Friday night, with a convincing victory over the Lady Saints at the Green House in Liberal. Seward County has lost four of their last five matches, with three against nationally-ranked opponents.

The Seward County Community College menís and womenís tennis teams dominated Hutchinson Community College yesterday in a dual match at the SCCC Tennis Courts and Blue Bonnet Park in Liberal. The Saints defeated the Blue Dragons 7-0, losing just four games in singles play and three doubles games. Overall the Saints recorded a 76-7 score in the seven matches played. The Lady Saints were equally impressive posting a 7-0 match record against the Lady Dragons. The Saints finish their fall season with an 84-47 record and the Lady Saints conclude their fall season with a 45-29 record.

The National Junior College Athletic Association announced on Wednesday that Seward County Community College sophomores Katy Troutman and Alex Droogsma were named the NJCAA Libero and Setter of the Week, respectively. Droogsma, for the second straight week, was named the top setter after distributing an average of 5.6 assists and 1.9 digs per game last week. Troutman also earns her second national libero of the week honor this season averaging 4.9 digs per game. The Seward County volleyball program has now had three players earn national player of the week recognition five times this season.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team notched their sixth Jayhawk West Conference victory of the season on Wednesday night with a 30-14, 30-14, 30-22 victory over sixth-place Pratt Community College on sophomore recognition night at the Green House in Liberal. Sophomore Alex Droogsma, Katy Troutman, Jazmin Hernandez and Heather Zerr were recognized prior to the Lady Saintsí three game victory. The win also marked two major accomplishments - the most victories for the SCCC volleyball program since the 2004 season, and the most wins in a season for third year head coach Bert Luallen. The No. 15 nationally-ranked Lady Saints improve to 25-7 overall and to 6-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Pratt falls to 9-15 overall and to 2-4 in league competition.

The Seward County Community College womenís tennis team competed at the Barton County Community College Tournament last weekend in Great Bend, Kan. The Lady Saints used a pair of wins each from freshmen Valerie Stevens and Alyssa Larson and from sophomore Erica Herrera while tallying a 10-7 overall team record. Seward County also collected two doubles victories from Larson and Stevens. It is the fourth straight tournament this fall where Seward County has posted at least a .500 record and they improve their overall record to 38-29.

The Seward County Community College menís tennis team saw four singles players and two doubles teams tie for a bracket championship last weekend at the Barton County Community College Tournament in Great Bend, Kan. Seward County sophomore Luis Cabizuca and freshman Ivan Michelli tied for a championship and sophomore Charlie Salter and freshman Shawn Hodge also claimed titles in singles competition. The doubles team of Victor Mesquita and Michelli tied for a doubles title with Saintsí doubles pair Rogerio Yamamoto and Cabizuca. Overall Seward County went 28-5 at the two day tournament. SCCC improves their overall fall record to 77-47 as a team.

The Seward County Community College Saints and Lady Saints basketball teams will be hosting the 3rd Annual Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Green House on the campus of SCCC. The Seward County Community College volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to Frank Phillips College 19-30, 9-30, 30-26, 15-30 on Friday night in Borger, Texas. The No. 7 Lady Plainsmen defeated the No. 12 Lady Saints for the second time this season in dominating fashion. Seward County loses their second straight match after dropping a conference match to No. 16 Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday night. It is only the second time this season that Seward County has lost back-to-back matches. Seward County falls to 1-5 overall this season against nationally-ranked opponents. The Lady Saints are now 24-7 overall and remain 5-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference and 3-1 in NJCAA D-I Region VI play. Frank Phillips improves to 26-1 overall.

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced on Wednesday that Seward County Community College sophomore Alex Droogsma was named the NJCAA Setter of the Week. Droogsma, a 5-foot-9-inch sophomore from Denver City, Texas, led the Lady Saints to a perfect 6-0 week with a conference win and five wins at the Midland Tournament while winning the tournament title. Droogsma also became the SCCC all-time career leader in assists last week with 2,409. She is the third player from Seward County this season to be named a NJCAA Player of the Week, joining Dan Yang (Player of the Week, Sept. 12) and Katy Troutman (Libero of the Week, Sept. 19).

The No. 12 Seward County Community College volleyball team lost its first conference match of the season on the road at No. 16 Hutchinson Community College 27-30, 21-30, 16-30, in front of a Hutchinson C.C. school-record crowd of 1,350 fans. The Lady Blue Dragons extended their Jayhawk West Conference winning streak to 29 straight matches, and have not been defeated in conference play since 2003. Seward County committed 40 errors and posted a .184 hitting percentage while falling to 24-6 overall, 5-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference and to 3-1 in NJCAA D-I Region VI competition.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team received a No. 12 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Top 20 ranking on Wednesday, which is their highest ranking since 2003 when the Lady Saints were ranked No. 11. Seward County moved up two spots in the poll following a perfect 6-0 week where they defeated conference foe Garden City in three games and won the Midland College Tournament with an impressive 5-0 mark. The No. 12 ranking is also the highest ranking the Lady Saints have received while under the guidance of third year head coach Bert Luallen. Seward County has now been ranked in eight polls during Luallenís tenure.
