The Seward County Community College volleyball team played their first road match of the season on Wednesday at Lamar Community College. The No. 15 ranked Lady Saints defeated the Lady Lopes 30-17, 27-30, 30-24 and 30-17, in a non-conference match at Lamar, Colo. Freshman setter, Alex Droogsma, paced Seward County with a career-high 58 assists (14.5/game) in Seward County’s four game match victory. Seward County improves to 3-2 overall, while Lamar C.C. falls to 0-6 overall this season.

The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced their 2006 Pre-Season Top 20 poll. Seward County Community College received a No. 15 ranking in the first poll of the 2006 season. The Lady Saints have now been ranked in the NJCAA Top 20 poll for the last 12 years. The SCCC volleyball programs first ranking came in 1995, under then head coach Dave Wilbers. This season the Seward County Lady Saints have started the season with a 2-2 overall record. SCCC defeated Cisco J.C. and Garden City C.C. last weekend in the SCCC Kick-Off Classic in Liberal.

The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced their 2006 Pre-Season All-American’s. Seward County Community College returning sophomore outside hitter Janete Ferreira, was named a Pre-Season Third Team All-American. Ferreira was one of 18 players who were named First, Second or Third team pre-season All-American. Ferreira was joined by fellow KJCCC player, Ana Kokanovic (Colby C.C.), who was also selected third team.

An exciting weekend of volleyball finished at the Green House on Saturday night, with Frank Phillips College winning the SCCC Kick-Off Classic on the campus at Seward County Community College. Following the final match of the classic, the All-Tournament Team was announced. All-Tournament selections were voted on by head coaches from all five teams that competed in the Kick-Off Classic.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team completed the SCCC Kick-Off Classic on Saturday with a victory and a loss. Seward County dropped their match against Frank Phillips College 21-30, 26-30 and 25-30. Frank Phillips finished the classic with a perfect 4-0 record, winning the Kick-Off Classic championship. The Lady Saints won the final match of the day against conference foe Garden City Community College. SCCC needed four games to defeat the Lady Broncbusters 30-24, 30-27, 28-30 and 30-15. Seward County is now 2-2 overall this season.

The Seward County Community College volleyball season is underway and so is the 2006 SCCC Kick-Off Classic, which began on Friday and continues through Saturday at the Green House on the campus of SCCC. The Lady Saints came out victorious in their season debut against Cisco Junior College. SCCC defeated the Lady Wranglers 30-12, 30-16 and 30-21. In the final match on Friday, Seward County dropped their match against New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) 26-30, 30-19, 27-30 and 27-30. Seward County is now 1-1 overall this season with two matches scheduled for Saturday.

Seward County Community College Head Cheerleading Coach, Scarlette Frydendall, has announced the 2006-2007 SCCC cheerleading squad. Frydendall accepted the head coaching position at SCCC on June 14. In just two months she has recruited 16 cheerleaders to join the Seward County cheerleading squad for the upcoming athletic year. Only five cheerleaders remain from the 2005-2006 squad that Frydendall inherited in the middle of June.

The SCCC Kick-Off Classic volleyball tournament begins tomorrow, August 25 at the Green House, on the campus of Seward County Community College. The two-day classic will have matches starting at 11:00 a.m. continuing through 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Seward County Lady Saints will welcome Cisco (TX) Junior College, Frank Phillips (TX) College, Garden City Community College and New Mexico Military Institute to this year’s classic.

Entering the 2006 volleyball season Seward County Community College Head Coach Bert Luallen will notice quite a bit has changed in one year. Gone from last year are six graduated sophomores, including one of the top players in the history of the program, Kelli Kirkwood. New to the program in 2006 are eight incoming freshman and a new assistant coach, Alana Rowland. Luallen is not only optimistic about the new faces that have joined him this year, but he is also ready to see the team succeed with youth as a focal point for the Seward County volleyball program in 2006.

Seward County Community College Head Volleyball Coach Bert Luallen, has announced the volleyball programs 2006 schedule. Luallen and the Lady Saints open their 2006 season this weekend hosting the SCCC Kick-Off Classic in the Green House. Seward County’s schedule has them playing eight home-dates, including the SCCC Invitational, a two-day round-robin tournament in the middle of October (13-14). Seward County is coming off a 24-15 overall record in 2004, where they finished third in the Jayhawk Conference and fourth at the NJCAA Region VI Tournament.

This year’s download-publication (pdf) has all of the information on the 2006 Lady Saints team, as well as information dating back to the program’s first season in 1973. This first-time publication documents all the years of Lady Saints volleyball including media information, coaching bio’s, player bio’s, 2006 preview, 2005 season in review, graduating sophomore (2005) bio’s, history of Seward County Volleyball and more. Get an inside look at Lady Saints Volleyball and also see the facilities of Seward County Community College in this year’s 76 page download-publication.

The Seward County Community College athletic department is in need of an official scorebook keeper for all SCCC Lady Saints Volleyball home matches. The Seward County Community College volleyball team is on campus and is getting ready for the 2006 season. Before any action took place on the court, the 2006 version of the Lady Saints along with Head Coach Bert Luallen, Assistant Coach Alana Miller, and their athletic trainers and student-managers took on the Seward County Community College Challenge/Ropes course.

The Seward County Community College women’s basketball program had one of their incoming freshman shine last week at the Oklahoma Senior All-Star Game. Incoming freshman Chontaye Walter was one of the star performers last Wednesday, July 26, in the Large Class Oklahoma State All-Star Game at Oral Roberts University. The All-Star Game featured the brightest young prospects from the 2006 graduating class.

FIVE FORMER SAINTS ARE PLAYING IN MLB ORGANIZATIONS

The Seward County Community College baseball program currently has five former players playing in the Minor Leagues for Major League Baseball organizations. Former Saints in the minor leagues are Jared Cranston (Giants), Jason Van Kooten (Rockies), Danny Vais (Twins), Cory Patton (Blue Jays) and Anthony Pannone (Giants). The Saints baseball program has been under the guidance of Head Coach Galen McSpadden for the past 25 years. In his career as head coach he has mentored 73 players (71 since 1993) who have been selected or who have signed professional contracts with Major League Baseball organizations.
