The Seward County Community College Board of Trustees established the tuition and fee amount for next year, approved an interagency agreement and heard an overview of a possible new program during its regular board meeting Monday, March 3.
The board unanimously voted to retain the current credit hour tuition and fees for the 2008-09 academic year. This decision will keep the tuition and fee rate at the same level as is currently applied. In-state student tuition is $40 per credit hour, border county tuition will remain at $50 per credit hour and out-of-state and international student tuition is $63 per credit hour. Fees for all students remain at $22 per credit hour. The board’s decision holds the tuition and fee amount at SCCC at a rate equal or less than the tuition/fees at peer colleges such as Dodge City, Garden City, Pratt and Colby.
The board approved a three-year interagency agreement with Kansas Rehabilitation Services regarding costs and responsibilities of services for disabled students. The Kansas Board of Regents endorsed the agreement and has encouraged each Kansas community college or university to sign the agreement designed to offer consistent services throughout the state.
Dale Reed, associate dean of educational services, gave an overview of the Process Technology Program with Pratt Community College. SCCC partnered with PCC in submitting a grant proposal to the U.S. Department of Labor to establish a Regional Energy Lifecycle Training Center by establishing a Process Technician program as a portion of the grant. If implemented, the program would include both work experience and general education and process technology courses. Reed said SCCC is looking at a process technology program emphasizing fuel alternatives or something related to the oil and gas industry.
Dr. Steve Cauble, board member, gave the other board members a list of questions they need to fill out as part of the ongoing Academic Quality Improvement Program, which is the program that helps SCCC maintain its accreditation.
Many departments on the SCCC campus are now working with their counterparts at the Southwest Kansas Technical School to prepare for the merger of the two institutions. One major issue is changing the classes from clock hours to credit hours. Since the Kansas Technical Education Authority is working on changes to the technical education programs statewide, Dr. Duane Dunn told the board that SCCC was not going to be making many changes to the existing programs at the technical school until it sees which direction the tech ed authority is going.
The college will also be administering an interest survey to area high school students. The survey will be administered to students at area high schools, and is designed to obtain student interest in a variety of programs and extracurricular activities. The results of the survey will be used to determine whether sufficient interest exists for new program development.
In other action, the board
1. approved the employment of Donna Fisher, director of financial aid;
2. accepted the resignation of Desiree Maxwell, director of admissions;
3. authorized the administration to pay $80,000 to USD 480 on July 1, 2008 and upon approval of the Southwest Kansas Technical School consolidation agreement by the Kansas Board of Regents;
5. ratified an articulation agreement with Pittsburg State University with an emphasis on technology programs; and
6. approved the addition of a director of assessment and research position effective July 1, 2008.

The next board meeting will be Monday, April 7. Spring break will be the week of March 17, with no classes in session, and the campus offices closed on Friday, March 21.
