After five successful years at the helm for the Seward County Saints, there aren’t many firsts that pop up on Head Coach Bryan Zollinger radar as far as accomplishments anymore. However, Thursday, as the NJCAA released its Preseason Top 25 Poll, Zollinger did notch a first. Despite three Jayhawk West Championships and two Region VI titles, the Saints had never been ranked in the preseason poll under Zollinger, until Thursday when Seward checked in at #9 in the opening rankings.

In an event that marks the kickoff to the basketball season and continues to grow in popularity, the Saints Bookstore Basketball Preview Night once again thrilled the audience in its 9th installment Tuesday night in the Greenhouse. In a loaded pack of talented squads, the Seward County Lady Saints have been chosen as the favorites in the Jayhawk West Conference by the league’s coaches as announced at conference media day Monday. Seward, who finished 23-8 overall last season and 11-5 in Jayhawk West Conference action return two of the top players in the league this season in sophomores Ricquia Jones and Anete Kirsteine, as well as boasting one of the top in state returnees in Kelsey Blair.

It hasn’t taken Seward County freshman Thayna Silva long to burst onto the KJCCC scene, as for the third time this season Silva was named the KJCCC Player of the Week on Tuesday, as voted on by league personnel.

The Seward County Lady Saints hope that at the end of the 2012 volleyball season that the win that they will look back on and mark as changing their seasons fortune was a Wednesday night win in front of a riled up home crowd over conference leading Hutchinson. Seward played a thriller against the Lady Blue Dragons Wednesday, taking down their formerly undefeated rivals in a five set marathon 3-2 to remain in the hunt for a Jayhawk West Conference Championship.

For the second time during her rookie season at Seward County, Lady Saints freshman outside hitter Thayna Silva has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week. This time she will share the honor with Colby setter Maisy Munson after a week in which she averaged 3.00 kills and 4.64 digs per set in a trio of Seward County matchups.

With their crowd decked out in pink for their annual “Dig Pink Night” for breast cancer awareness, the Seward County Lady Saints not only took care of business on the court with a 3-0 win over the visiting Clarendon Bulldogs, but the Lady Saints also helped continue a winning battle for breast cancer awareness, raising $355 from donations from fans to help combat the disease.

On Sunday, after playing their 35th inning of baseball in the past two days, the Seward County Saints Baseball team took some time out of their busy schedule to spend it with the kids of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Haskell, Stevens, and Seward counties. A stable of youngsters grabbed their fishing poles and teamed up with the Saints on the dock, catching fish after fish with smiles that lit up the evening sky.
