As part of their regular meeting Tuesday, members of the Seward County Community College Board of Trustees reviewed the compensation review project as well as projects connected to the Academic Quality Improvement Program.
The board reviewed the ongoing Compease compensation review project. In the first stage of the process, the supervisor evaluates each employee position according to eight criteria. The Compease project allows for improved budget projections, clarification of employee expectations, and alignment of position descriptions with actual job expectations. The review also allows supervisors to more effectively provide employee performance reviews and align performance with position expectations.
The board reviewed two of three AQIP projects that have been submitted to the Higher Learning Commission. The college has completed Developmental Education and the Marketing and Recruiting projects. The AQIP Steering Committee is finalizing the final project, the Student Success Plan, that will be submitted prior to Sept. 14.
As a result of the action taken so far, the Developmental Education project will now be split into two separate projects, said Cynthia Rapp, dean of instruction. The math department will work separately from the English/Writing/Reading part of the project. English, Writing and Reading Skills instructors will narrow their focus and address new action projects.
Dale Reed, associate dean of educational services, told the board of the upcoming Gas Measurement and Pipeline Institute. He also told the board of the potential to add a Gas Compressor Mechanics program. In addition, SCCC is working with Pratt Community College and the Kansas Department of Commerce to develop training for the ethanol plants, both short-term and long-term training.
Rapp told the board that two representatives from the Kansas Board of Regents will be on campus to meet with representatives of the college and the Southwest Kansas Technical School to discuss instructional issues that need to be addressed in light of a potential merger between the college and the technical school.
Dr. Duane Dunn, SCCC president, told the board that he is still working with USD 480 on the final language of an agreement to merge the technical school with the college.
Tommy Williams, dean of administrative services, presented a potential project list to the board, a list that will be presented to the board of regents. The list of projects cover such areas as resurfacing of parking lots and sidewalks; building additions; replacement of boilers and chillers and other operational equipment; and improvements to buildings, including the technical school.
In other action, the board
1. purchased a variety of audio-visual and multimedia equipment from Cytek Media Systems of Topeka in the amount of $51,123.50 to outfit and upgrade seven multimedia classrooms, including six in the Hobble Academic Building and one in the Colvin Adult Learning Center, and
2. approved Dr. Steve Cauble as the voting delegate for SCCC at the upcoming Association of Community College Trustees Leadership Congress this month.
Plans for the SCCC Development Foundation Party Auction are under way with the auction scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept.22 at the Seward County Event Center on the Fairgrounds. The theme is Malt Shop Memories. Tickets are $20 per person and must be purchased in advance. This event raises money for scholarships and special projects.
The next board meeting is at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, in the board room.
