Just hours after receiving a No. 19 NJCAA Top 25 ranking, the Seward County Community College volleyball team won their Jayhawk West Conference opening match against Butler Community College, 30-27, 30-23 and 30-19, Wednesday night at the Green House in Liberal. Seward Countyís victory also marked the 50th win for third year head coach Bert Luallen. Seward County improves to 3-2 overall this season and to 1-0 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Butler drops their first match of the season falling to 4-1 overall and to 0-1 in conference play.

Seward County Community College head womenís basketball coach Toby Wynn has been selected to speak at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Womenís Basketball Coaching Clinic on Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Swinney Recreation Center. Wynn will be speaking on the topic of motion offense and quick hitters to high school and college coaches in attendance for the 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. clinic. The featured speaker at the clinic will be Womenís Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (2003), Marsha Sharp, who is the former womenís basketball head coach at Texas Tech University.

Seward County Community College freshman Dan Yang has been named the NJCAA D-I Region VI Player of the Week. Yang, an outside hitter from Beijing, China, was the top player for Seward County at the SCCC Kick-Off Classic. Yang collected 52 kills (5.71 kpg.), a .352 hitting percentage, 34 digs and 19 service aces. She was the only player from SCCC to be named to the Kick-Off Classic All-Tournament Team.

The National Junior College Athletic Association has released the 2007 NJCAA D-I Pre-Season Volleyball poll. Seward County Community College received a No. 19 ranking in the first poll of the season. The Lady Saints have now received a NJCAA national ranking for 13 straight years, dating back to the programís first ranking in 1995. Seward County is coming off a 23-25 overall season in 2006. SCCC finished last season strong winning eight of their last 10 matches ending the season as the NJCAA D-I Region VI Tournament runner-up. Seward County was one-of-two Region VI teams ranked in the pre-season poll as Hutchinson Community College was tabbed No. 14.

Last weekendís SCCC Kick-Off Classic finished at the Green House on Saturday night with Frank Phillips College claming the 2007 classic title with a perfect 4-0 record. The SCCC Kick-Off Classic All-Tournament Team was announced Tuesday morning with selections voted on by head coaches of the five participating volleyball teams.

Seward County Community College menís basketball coach Bryan Zollinger has completed his first recruiting class as head coach of the Saints program. Zollinger recently announced the signings of Thiago Oliveira (6-5, forward) and Bruno Mendes (6-3, guard), both incoming freshmen student-athletes from Brazil. The Saints will enter the season with a roster that includes four post-players and eight perimeter players. The Saints are welcoming back five sophomores from the 2006-2007 team that finished with a 17-14 overall record. Last season SCCC ended their campaign with an appearance in the NJCAA Region VI Tournament quarterfinals.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team opened their 2007 season with two straight victories on Friday at the SCCC Kick-Off Classic, sponsored by Jolies Images. Behind a standout debut from freshman Dan Yang, the Lady Saints knocked off Cisco Junior College (30-23, 30-18 and 30-15) and New Mexico Military Institute (30-14, 30-18, 18-30 and 30-22) on their home court at the Green House. Yang, a 6-foot-2-inch outside hitter from Beijing, China, tied a SCCC all-time record for aces in a match with 10, and collected a total of 35 kills (.458 %) and 15 service aces in her Lady Saintsí debut on Friday.

The Seward County Community College volleyball program will open their 2007 season this weekend hosting the SCCC Kick-Off Classic, sponsored by Jolies Images. Action will begin at the Green House on Friday, Aug. 24 with five matches beginning at 11 a.m. Then action will conclude on Saturday, Aug. 25 with matches starting at 9 a.m. and the final match slatted for 5 p.m. Seward County opens their season hosting Cisco Junior College, Frank Phillips College, Garden City Community College and New Mexico Military Institute.

Seward County Community College first-year head menís basketball coach Bryan Zollinger has announced the Saints 2007-2008 recruiting class. After being named the seventh head menís basketball coach at SCCC, Zollinger has signed a recruiting class that includes five freshmen and one sophomore transfer student-athlete. Overall the Saints will welcome four student-athletes from Kansas, one from Maryland and one from Missouri. Zollinger also inherits five returning players from last seasons squad that finished 17-14 overall.

This summer the Seward County baseball and womenís tennis programs each led their respective sport in the 2006-2007 KJCCC Academic Team standings.

Former Seward County Community College baseball player Scott Houin has signed a professional baseball contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Houin, who played for the Saints in 2004-2005, played 46 games this summer with the Aiken Foxhounds of the South Coast Independence league, where he batted a league-leading .359 with eight home runs, 40 RBI, 20 stolen bases and was named the South Coast League Player of the Month (July). Houin played his final collegiate season this past spring at Mount Olive College, where he was named a NCAA D-II Honorable Mention All-American batting .322 with 11 home runs and 70 RBI.

The Seward County Community College athletic department has announced Delvin Kinser as the new public address announcer for all SCCC volleyball and menís and womenís basketball home games at the Green House. Kinser has 16 years of announcing experience in various radio, television and public relations positions. Kinser is currently the News Director at Great Plains Christian Radio in Meade, Kan. He also serves as a Praise and Worship Pastor for the Latter House Worship Center in Liberal.

The Seward County Community College athletic department is currently selling reserved basketball seats for the 2007-2008 Saints and Lady Saints season. The SCCC basketball season consists of 15 regular season home dates with a total of 29 menís and womenís games. The middle lower level is a reserved section, and the first six seats on the inside of the east and west lower level sections are also reserved. Reserved seats cost $150 each, with a Saints Booster Club membership.

The Seward County Community College volleyball program is hosting the SCCC Lady Saints Volleyball Team and Individual Camp this week at the Green House. Lady Saintsí head coach Bert Luallen and assistant coach Alana Rowland are working with 6th-12th grade volleyball players from area schools in one-on-one workouts and team competitions. There are 15 individuals taking part in the morning session from 8 a.m. to noon, and approximately 40-50 players attending the team camp from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The individual and team camps started on Monday and will finish on Thursday.
Seward County Community College womenís basketball head coach Toby Wynn has announced the signing of Karolina Zajac, a 5-foot-10-inch point guard from Krakow, Poland. Zajac is the final signee that will join the 2007-2008 Lady Saints basketball recruiting class. Wynn and assistant coach Kim Ortega-Davis have signed a total of nine incoming student-athletes for the upcoming season. The Lady Saints return five sophomores from last seasonís team that won the Jayhawk West Conference, NJCAA Region 6 Tournament and placed third at the NJCAA National Tournament with a 36-2 overall record.
