The National Junior College Athletic Association announced Wednesday that Seward County Community College men’s basketball player Theron Wilson has been named the NJCAA Player of the Week, for Nov. 19-25. Wilson led the Saints to a 3-0 record last week with victories on the road against Newman University J.V. (111-75), Cowley College (97-87) and Sterling College J.V. (95-51). Wilson is having a phenomenal start to his sophomore season averaging 25.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 3.2 steals and 2.4 blocks per game.

The Seward County Community College women's basketball team prepares for the Jayhawk Shootout this weekend in Coffeyville, Kan. The Lady Saints will play on Friday, Dec. 1 at 9 p.m. against Labette Community College (5-3) and on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. against Fort Scott Community College (6-2). The No. 11 Seward County women's basketball team is currently one-of-three teams in the NJCAA Region VI who are still undefeated this season with an 8-0 overall record. Former Seward County Community College volleyball standout, Kelli Kirkwood, will be playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Volleyball Championship with the Winthrop University volleyball team. Kirkwood, a junior at Winthrop has helped the Lady Eagles volleyball team to a 34-2 overall record and to the programs fifth consecutive Big South Conference Tournament championship. This season also marks the fifth consecutive season that Winthrop has advanced to the NCAA Division I National Tournament. Winthrop will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Nov. 30 against the University of Northern Iowa (27-7).

The Seward County Community College men's basketball team completed a perfect 3-0 week on the road, with a dominating 95-51 victory over Sterling College J.V. on Saturday night at the Pratt Thanksgiving Classic. Seward County was led by sophomore shooting guard, Michael Tyree, who scored 25 points and was unstoppable shooting the basketball. The Saints finish the week with three non-conference road wins over Newman University J.V., Cowley College and Saturday night's win against Sterling College J.V. The No. 11 nationally-ranked Lady Saints were led by freshman, Audra Binford, who scored a career-high 28 points in the Lady Saints 37th consecutive non-conference victory. Seward County takes a 35 game non-conference winning streak into competition this weekend where they will face Williston State College on Friday and McCook Community College on Saturday. Seward County Community College sophomore, Michael Tyree, broke the men's basketball all-time record for three-point field goals in a single game in the Saints 114-83 victory, over Clarendon College on Saturday night at the Green House. The Saints cruised in their 31 point blowout over the Bulldogs, in the second day of competition at the SCCC Wendy's Classic. Seward County led from the beginning of the game with their largest lead coming in the second half with 10:08 remaining in the game (88-48). Seward County improves to 5-1 overall this season.

The Seward County Community College women's basketball team posted their sixth straight victory to open the 2006-2007 season on Saturday night against Clarendon College. SCCC knocked off the Lady Bulldogs 76-58, after leading by only two points at half-time. Seward County forced 32 turnovers, and received scoring from seven players to win their 35th consecutive non-conference game. Seward County defeated Clarendon in day-two of the Wendy's Classic at the Green House in Liberal. Seward improves their overall season record to 6-0.

The Seward County Community College women’s basketball team defeated Rose State College 86-59, on Friday night in the opening night of the Wendy’s Classic at the Green House in Liberal. Seward County jumped out to a 14 point lead in the opening seven minutes of the game, and would never trail in their 27-point non-conference victory over the Lady Raiders. The Lady Saints improve their non-conference winning streak to 34 games with the victory on Friday night. SCCC continues their impressive non-conference schedule improving their overall season record to 5-0.

Seward County Community College sophomore women’s basketball player, Chelsea Blackshear, signed a National Collegiate Athletic Association letter of intent with West Texas A&M University on Wednesday afternoon. Blackshear and the Lady Saints Basketball program held a press conference on Wednesday in the SCCC All-American Room to announce where Blackshear would sign for the 2007-2008 basketball season. Blackshear is a starting guard for the Lady Saints this season and is averaging 11.3 points and leads the team with 4.3 assists per game.

Seward County Community College sophomore volleyball player, Janete Ferreira, signed a National Collegiate Athletic Association letter of intent with Oral Roberts University. Ferreira and the Lady Saints volleyball program held a press conference on Wednesday in the SCCC All-American Room to announce where Ferreira would continue her collegiate volleyball career. Ferreira completed her playing career with the Lady Saints last weekend at the NJCAA Region VI Tournament. She finishes her career at Seward County as the all-time record holder for single-season kills with 667 this season.

Seward County Community College baseball players, Erik Hegstad, Kai Kirby and Bo Merrell signed official National Collegiate Athletic Association letter’s of intent on Wednesday afternoon. The three sophomores and the Seward County baseball program held a press conference in the SCCC All-American Room to officially announce where they were going to continue their collegiate baseball careers. Hegstad (University of Northern Colorado), Kirby (Stephen F. Austin University) and Merrell (Texas State University) signed letters of intent to their respective NCAA Division I universities.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team had their season come to an end in the NJCAA Region VI Tournament Championship match. The Lady Saints were defeated 30-18, 30-24, 30-19 by Hutchinson Community College, who won their third consecutive NJCAA Region VI Tournament championship, Sunday afternoon at the Hutchinson High School Salthawk Activities Center. Seward County upset No. 2 seed Colby Community College twice during the tournament to earn a berth in the Region VI championship. In finishing the season, the Lady Saints won eight of their last 10 matches of the regular and post-season combined. Seward County finishes the season 23-25 overall, marking the 16th consecutive season that the SCCC volleyball program has won over 20 matches. This seasons Region VI Tournament runner-up finish also marks nine of the last 10 seasons Seward County has played in the Region VI Tournament Championship match. SCCC has won five Region VI championships with four runner-up finishes.

The Lady Saints (3-0, 0-0) controlled the game by shooting 54 per cent from the floor and limiting Northeastern Colorado to 24 per cent from the field. Seward County used double-figure scoring from three players to win Friday night at the Bank of Colorado Event Center in Sterling.

Seward County Community College sophomore Theron Wilson has been nothing short of phenomenal for the men’s basketball team this season. Friday night Wilson led the Saints in a non-conference victory at the Green House over Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, 92-76, scoring 31 points with 17 rebounds to guide the Saints to 3-1 overall start this season. Seward County shot 52 per cent from the floor in the second half as the Saints were too much for the Jets at the Green House.

After finishing their best season in Seward County Community College men’s tennis history, the Saints team has earned the respect once again of the nation polls. The SCCC tennis team received a No. 6 International Tennis Association/National Junior College Athletic Association ranking in the Pre-Season poll that was released today. In 2006, the Saints completed their spring season in 9th place at the NJCAA National Tournament in Plano, Texas. The pre-season poll also ranked seven Saints singles players in the Top 60 in the nation and two SCCC doubles pairs received Top 30 rankings. The Saints return five sophomores off last season’s national tournament team.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Seward County Community College women’s tennis team has received a Top 20 International Tennis Association/National Junior College Athletic Association Pre-Season ranking. The Lady Saints enter the 2007 tennis season as the No. 13 team in the nation. Seward County is coming off a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in 2006, where they finished in 10th place among the competition. This season, the Lady Saints return three sophomores who were all listed as nationally-ranked singles players in the pre-season poll.

Seward County Community College women’s basketball players Ilda Chambe and Wanya Brown signed National Collegiate Athletic Association letters of intent on Wednesday evening. Chambe signed with the University of Texas-El Paso and Brown signed with the University of Central Florida, both programs are NCAA Division I basketball programs that play in Conference USA. Today was the first official day that athletes could sign letters of intent with NCAA programs. Chambe and Brown held a press conference in the All-American Room on campus at SCCC to announce their decisions on where they would continue their basketball careers.

Seward County Community College sophomore third baseman Toby Davis signed an official National Collegiate Athletic Association letter of intent to play baseball at Oklahoma State University in 2007-2008. Today was the first day that NCAA athletic programs could have potential student-athletes sign letters of intent. Davis and the Saints baseball program held a press conference in the All-American Room on campus at SCCC to announce Davis’ decision to sign with the OSU baseball program. Davis chose Oklahoma State over the University of Arkansas and Texas State University.

The Seward County Community College (21-23) volleyball team is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 2 seeded Colby Community College (25-17) in the second round of the four-team tournament on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Two-time defending Jayhawk West and Region VI Champion, Hutchinson Lady Blue Dragons (19-13) are the No. 1 seed. Hutchinson is awaiting the winner of No. 5 Garden City vs. No. 4 Cloud County tonight, to see who they will open the tournament against at noon on Saturday.

The Seward County Community College men's basketball team defeated North Lake College 88-52, in the second day of the Pepsi Classic at the Green House in Liberal. The Saints knocked off the defending NJCAA Division III champs by shooting .500 from the field (35-for-70) and by forcing North Lake into 16 turnovers. Saints sophomore Theron Wilson scored a career-high 25 points, including 20 points in the first-half. Wilson and the Saints played strong perimeter defense holding North Lake to 3-of-20 from three-point range. The Saints improve to 2-0 overall this season, improving their non-conference winning streak to 22 games, a streak that spans over the past three seasons.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and NJCAA Region VI officials have announced the 2006 Jayhawk West All-Conference and All-Region VI teams that were voted on by conference and Region VI head coaches. Seward County Community College was represented on the All-Conference and All-Region VI teams by four players. Sophomore outside hitter Janete Ferreira was named First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region VI. Sophomore right side hitter Juliana Nascimento was tabbed Second Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region VI. Seward County had two freshmen who earned All-Conference and All-Region VI honors. Setter Alex Droogsma and libero Katy Troutman both received Second Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region VI recognition.
