The Seward County Community College athletic department has announced the Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night raised a total of $363 that has been donated to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Seward, Haskell and Stevens Counties organization. The BBBS is a non-profit organization that helps match caring mentors with children who need the friendship of a special adult in their lives. Most of the children in the program come from single-parent families.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team celebrated sophomore recognition night with a victory against Butler Community College in a Jayhawk West Conference match at the Green House on Wednesday night. Seward County defeated Butler 30-23, 30-21, 30-32 and 30-20, in front of the home fans who saw sophomores, Dana McLaren, Juliana Nascimento and Janete Ferreira play their final regular season match on the volleyball court at the Green House. Seward County Community College sophomore baseball player, Erik Hegstad, has been selected to participate in the Region VI vs. Region II Benefit All-Star Workout and doubleheader at Oklahoma State University on Sunday, October 29. The workout will begin at 9 a.m. beginning with the 60 yard sprints, followed with defensive evaluations and batting practice for all participants from both regions. All proceeds from this event will go to support the family of Seminole State Collegeís head baseball coach Eric Myers, who recently had a tumor removed from his brain.

Seward County Community College sophomore, Janete Ferreira, has broken the most prolific offensive record in the Seward County volleyball all-time record books. Ferreira, a dominating 6í0Ē outside hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, collected a team-high 16 kills on Wednesday night to help Seward County defeat Pratt Community College on the road 30-21, 32-30 and 30-23, as she became the programs all-time single-season kills leader. Ferreira and the fourth-place Lady Saints improve to 19-23 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk West Conference.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team finished fifth-place at the Missouri State-West Plains Tournament in West Plains, Missouri, last weekend. The Lady Saints lost their first two matches against No. 3 Iowa Western and No. 4 Missouri State-West Plains, before defeating Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, State Fair Community College and Mineral Area College. Tournament competition was played at West Plains Civic Center, where the NJCAA National Tournament will be hosted Nov. 20-22. The Lady Saints improve to 18-23 overall this season, and remain 2-3 in the Jayhawk West Conference and 1-2 in NJCAA D-I District competition.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team lost their sixth consecutive match on Wednesday night in a Jayhawk West Conference match-up against No. 10 Hutchinson Community College (16-10, 6-0), in Hutchinson at the Sports Arena. The Lady Saints were defeated in three games, 26-30, 18-30 and 27-30. Hutchinson remains in first-place in the Jayhawk West Conference, while Seward County (15-21, 2-3) falls to fourth-place in conference play and remains in third place in NJCAA Division I District standings. Seward County falls to 0-9 against NJCAA Top 20 ranked teams this season.

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) hosted their annual basketball coachesí pre-season press conference Monday morning in Wichita, Kan., at the Best Western Airport Inn. KJCCC conference officials released that Seward County Community College received a No. 5 ranking by conference head coaches in the Jayhawk West Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll. The Saints are coming off a 21-10 overall record in 2005-2006, and a 7-9 Jayhawk West Conference record finishing in a tie for fifth-place in the conference last season.

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) had their annual basketball coachesí pre-season press conference Monday morning in Wichita, Kan., at the Best Western Airport Inn. The Jayhawk West pre-season poll that was released by conference officials had Seward County Community College ranked No. 2 by conference head coaches behind Cloud County Community College, who was picked to win the conference in 2006-2007. The Lady Saints are coming off a 25-7 overall record in 2005-2006, and a 10-6 Jayhawk West Conference record finishing in fourth-place in the conference last season.

Seward County Community College freshman volleyball player, Katy Troutman, has broken the Lady Saints all-time single-season record for defensive digs. Troutman, a 5 foot-4 inch libero, from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, improved her season total for digs to 598, after recording 61 digs in three matches last weekend at the SCCC Invitational in Liberal. Troutman breaks the all-time single-season record that was previously set in 1998 by former Seward County First Team NJCAA All-American, Gabi Carbone, who posted 589 digs in 57 matches during the 1998 season. Troutmanís 598 digs have come in only 35 matches this season.

The road to success has traveled through many top volleyball programs lately for the Seward County Community College volleyball team, and Saturday was no exception. The Lady Saints battled against two nationally ranked opponents on Saturday as they lost hard-fought matches against No. 7 University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (25-4) and (previously ranked No. 18) Midland College (25-12) on Saturday afternoon at the Green House in Liberal. The Lady Saints hosted the two-day SCCC Invitational, where three current NJCAA Top 20 teams participated. Last season all of the programs received Top 20 national rankings with four of them reaching the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament in West Plains, Missouri.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team is hosting the SCCC Invitational Tournament this weekend at the Green House in Liberal, Kan. In their opening match, the Lady Saints dropped a three-game contest to No. 1 ranked Western Nebraska Community College 19-30, 12-30 and 19-30, in the final match of the first day of competition. Western Nebraska was too much for the Lady Saints as they improved their overall record to 40-1 this season. Seward County falls to 15-18 overall this season. The Lady Cougars won both of their matches on Friday as they knocked off Barton County C.C. 30-14, 30-25 and 30-17 earlier on Friday.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team lost a hard fought match Thursday night to Barton County Community College (23-6, 6-0) at the Green House in Liberal, Kan. The Lady Saints (15-17, 2-2) were competitive in every game of the match but were unable to come away with the victory against a powerful Barton County program. Seward County fell to BCCC 23-30, 30-26, 18-30 and 31-33, a day before the Lady Saints will host the SCCC Invitational, where they will welcome three nationally ranked volleyball teams. Seward County drops to 2-2 in the Jayhawk West Conference with the loss Thursday night.

The Seward County Community College womenís tennis team competed in the International Tennis Association (ITA) Small School Regional Tennis Tournament in Wichita, Kan., on Sept. 29-30. The competition placed all Regional singles players and Regional doubles partners into one bracket respectively, with the singles winner and doubles pair who won the tournament advancing to the ITA Small School National Tournament. Seward County did not have a regional champion this fall season, but several SCCC players recorded multiple wins in the two-day regional tournament in Wichita.

The Seward County Community College menís tennis team competed in the two-day International Tennis Association (ITA) Small School Regional Tennis Tournament on Sept. 29-30 in Wichita, Kan. The tournament was designed to advance one winner from singles competition among all the schools participating and for one doubles pair to advance from bracket competition to the ITA Small School National Tennis Tournament. The Saints completed the tournament with an 11-16 overall record, including a 9-12 record among singles players.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team started a stretch in their schedule last Friday that has them playing seven nationally ranked opponents in eight matches. Seward County opened that stretch with a three-game loss at No. 9 Frank Phillips College last Friday night in Borger, Texas. The Lady Saints did compete and played well against the nationally ranked Lady Plainsmen (30-5) who defeated SCCC 28-30, 20-30 and 24-30. Seward County falls to 15-16 overall this season and remains 2-1 in the Jayhawk West and 1-1 in district competition.

The Seward County Community College volleyball team captured their second consecutive Jayhawk West Conference match on Wednesday night hosting Dodge City Community College (2-22, 0-5). The Lady Saints dominated Dodge City defeating them 30-15, 30-19 and 30-19. Seward County (15-15, 2-1 Jayhawk West)) played a solid all-around match with a convincing three-game match victory over the Lady Conquistadors.

Seward County Community College volleyball player, Janete Ferreira, was selected to the Midland College Classic All-Tournament Team. Ferreira was named All-Tournament team after leading the Lady Saints volleyball team to a 2-2 record at the two-day classic last weekend. Ferreira posted 49 kills, 29 digs, four service aces and she recorded one double/double (12 kills/10 digs vs. New Mexico Military). This All-Tournament team selection is Ferreiraís second of the season, and the fourth in her two-year career at Seward County C.C.

Only one month remains until the start of the Seward County Community College menís and womenís basketball season. Until then, both the Saints and Lady Saints basketball players will prepare for their season openers at the Nov. 2-4 Pepsi Classic, by playing in several pre-season scrimmages in October. Both the Saints and Lady Saints will be making a special one-night preview for the public on Oct. 28, when they host the Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night. The month of September has seen the SCCC volleyball team play 22-of-23 matches on the road. In the month of September, the Lady Saints have played in four classics and two Jayhawk West Conference matches.

The Lady Saints went 2-2 at the Midland College Classic this weekend with victories against New Mexico Military Institute (30-26, 30-26, 31-29) and Temple College (30-24, 30-17, 31-29) and two losses against Alvin Community College (18-30, 30-24, 17-30, 30-26, 11-15) and No. 16 Northeastern Colorado Junior College (14-30, 25-30, 21-30). Seward County moves to 14-15 overall this season and remains 1-1 in the Jayhawk West Conference and 1-1 in Division competition. In the month of September, the Lady Saints played 22-of-23 matches away from the Green House in Liberal.
