The Seward County Community College softball team went back to familiar territory yesterday traveling to Otero Junior College. Last season, Otero hosted SCCC for the District C Playoff when Otero defeated Seward advancing them into the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series. Yesterday afternoon, Otero J.C. swept the Lady Saints in LaJunta, 11-4 and 7-5 in a non-conference doubleheader. Lady Saints sophomore second baseman, Stephanie Jaime, lead the Lady Saints hitting two home runs in the doubleheader. SCCC falls to 22-16 overall and remains 6-0 in the Jayhawk West and 0-2 in District competition.

The Seward County Community College baseball team split a Jayhawk West Conference doubleheader at Colby on Wednesday afternoon, as both teams entered the day tied for first place in the Western division. SCCC sophomore, Matt Sopic, pitched five scoreless innings in game-two leading the Saints to a 7-5 victory. The Trojans defeated the Saints 3-0 in game-one of the doubleheader. Seward County is now 20-13 overall and 8-4 in the Jayhawk West Conference. Colby moves to 17-16 overall and remains tied with the Saints at 8-4 in the conference competition.

The Seward County Community College softball team welcomed back their top hitter from a year ago, as yesterday sophomore, Amanda McCue, made her 2006 softball debut after playing her final season with the Lady Saints basketball team. With the help of McCue in game-two, the Lady Saints swept a non-conference doubleheader from Clarendon College yesterday, 4-1 and 9-1 at Lady Saints Softball Field in Liberal. Seward County improves to 22-14 overall and remains 6-0 in the Jayhawk West and 0-2 in District play.

The Seward County Community College baseball team swept a Jayhawk West Conference doubleheader Monday night against Butler Community College, 13-3 and 8-7. The Saints put the ten run-rule into effect in the sixth inning of game-one and needed extra innings to defeat the Grizzlies in game-two for the sweep. Seward County improves to 19-12 overall and is tied for first place in the Jayhawk West with a 7-3 conference record. Butler falls to 16-7 overall and drops into a tie for sixth place with a 3-5 conference mark.

The Seward County Community College softball team has returned to Liberal after their spring break trip to Phoenix, Arizona, where they played two Top 10 nationally ranked opponents. The Lady Saints went 1-5 in Arizona, playing against the defending NJCAA D-I National Champions, Central Arizona, NJCAA (D-II) No. 7 Mesa Community College and Glendale Community College. The Lady Saints are now 20-14 overall and remain 6-0 in the Jayhawk West Conference and 0-2 in District competition.

The Seward County Community College baseball team started the second-half of their season yesterday at home against Cloud County Community College at Brent Gould Field. After cruising to a 12-5 victory in game-one over the Thunderbirds the Saints fell in the nightcap 16-8, after leading 8-4 going into the top of the seventh inning and allowing Cloud County to score 12 runs (eight unearned runs). Seward County is now 17-12 overall and 5-3 in the Jayhawk West Conference.

The Seward County Community College baseball team has returned back to Liberal from their seven day spring break trip to Phoenix, Arizona, where the Saints played six junior colleges from Arizona, Kansas and Washington. The Saints went 3-4 overall playing six games with wooden bats and one game with aluminum bats. The Saints are now 16-11 overall and remain 4-2 in the Jayhawk West Conference.

The Saints finish their spring break trip with a 3-4 record in six days of competition. Seward County falls to 16-11 overall this season with Jayhawk West Conference games filling the remainder of the Saints regular season schedule.

The Seward County Community College baseball team split two non-conference games on Wednesday afternoon in Coolidge, Arizona.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher, Chris Holguin led the Saints in a 2-0 victory over Central Arizona College. The 6’1” Lubbock native pitched a complete-game as he shutout the Vaqueros in the seven inning game. The Saints were not able to win two games on the day dropping game-two against Big Bend (Wash.) Community College 9-7. The Saints are now 16-10 overall and 3-3 on their spring break trip in Phoenix.

It was a non-conference match-up that involved two Region VI baseball programs as Seward County Community College and Fort Scott Community College played one nine-inning game at Scottsdale Community College on Tuesday afternoon. The Fort Scott Greyhounds dominated the Saints 11-4, dropping the Saints to 15-9 overall this season and 2-2 during their spring break trip in Phoenix.

Déjà vu at the ball park could have been the theme for the Seward County Community College baseball team on Monday afternoon against Glendale Community College. Last Saturday, the Saints scored four runs in the ninth inning to overtake the Gauchos in a late game comeback. In similar fashion on Monday, the Saints upended Glendale again by scoring four runs in the ninth inning to sweep the two-game non-conference series against Glendale. Seward County finished the day with a 7-4 victory over Glendale after dropping their first game on Monday 8-6, against South Mountain Community College on the Saints annual week-long spring break trip to Phoenix, Arizona. Both games on Monday were nine-inning games, with each team using wood bats.

The Seward County Community College baseball team started their spring break trip in Arizona on Saturday afternoon against Glendale Community College. The Saints trailed Glendale 8-5, heading into the top of the ninth inning, but rallied in the ninth inning to score four runs winning their first game on their Arizona trip. The Saints and Gauchos played one nine inning non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. The No. 18 Seward County Saints improve to 14-7 overall this season.

The Saints defeated the Conquistadors 10-8 in game-one and 19-2 in the nightcap. The Saints improve to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the Jayhawk West Conference, while Dodge City falls to 3-17 overall and 1-9 in the Jayhawk West.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College (KJCCC) officials have announced the 2005-2006 Jayhawk West All-Conference teams. The Seward County Community College basketball program was represented on the First Team as sophomore, Adam Tanner, received Jayhawk West First Team All-Conference accolades. Tanner, a 6’8” center from Melbourne, Australia, was among the Conference’s elite in his sophomore season being place on the five-player First Team.

The Seward County Community College women’s basketball team had four players earn All-Conference honors including freshman, Ilda Chambe (Second Team) and sophomores, Brio Rode (Second Team), Amanda McCue (Honorable Mention) and Sierra Radke (Honorable Mention). The Lady Saints basketball team had more players earn All-Conference recognition than any other program in the 19 school Region VI.

The Lady Saints dropped game-one 4-1, in the most dominating pitching performance against SCCC this season. Colby’s Amanda Bell struck out 14 Lady Saints, throwing a complete game four-hitter. In game-two, SCCC dropped a heart-breaker in 10 innings to the Lady Trojans 4-3. Seward County falls to 17-9 overall and 0-2 in District competition. Colby improves to 16-8 overall and 2-0 in District play.

The Broncbusters defeated Seward County in game-one 6-1, and the Saints won game-two in the bottom of the seventh inning under the lights at Brent Gould Field, 5-4. The Seward County Community College softball team won the Pratt Tournament this past weekend with a 3-1 record. Seward County lost their first game to Lamar 10-8, and then defeated Southwestern Iowa 20-4, Lamar 3-1 and Pratt 8-7 to win the Pratt Tournament. Lady Saints right-handed pitcher, Sarah Wittwer, picked up two victories in the tournament and freshman right-handed pitcher, Stephanie McCarthy, won the tournament title game against Pratt. Seward County improves to 17-7 overall and remains 6-0 in the Jayhawk West Conference.

The Seward County Community College baseball team split their season-opening Jayhawk West Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Hutchinson Community College at Brent Gould Field in Liberal. The Saints knocked off Hutchinson in game-one 10-5, and then lost game-two 8-3. Seward’s pitching staff allowed 13 runs in the doubleheader but only six of the runs were earned runs.

The Seward County Community College baseball game against Garden City Community College scheduled for Sunday, March 12, has been re-scheduled for Monday, March 13, at 5:00 p.m. at Brent Gould Field on the campus of Seward County Community College.

The games were re-scheduled due to expected wind conditions at 35-45 m.p.h. throughout the rest of Sunday afternoon.

The Saints (10-6, 1-1 Jayhawk West) and Broncbusters (11-3, 2-2) will play their first Jayhawk West Conference games against each other Monday night under the lights at Brent Gould Field.
The Seward County Community College women’s basketball team had their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in the Region VI Tournament Quarter-Finals at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita. Seward County was defeated by Labette Community College 62-60, in a game that saw the Lady Saints and Lady Cardinals dominate the game for a period of time. SCCC first-year Head Coach, Toby Wynn, guided the Lady Saints basketball program to another successful season with a 25-7 overall record.

The Lady Saints won every match where they had a player competing, but suffered two losses in each competition due to disqualification. The Lady Saints defeated both Hutchinson and Kansas Newman 7-2. Seward County improves to 4-1 this season with a 30-15 match record against their opponents.

The Saints won 9-0 at Hutchinson on Tuesday and then defeated Kansas Newman 6-3 on Thursday, as both matches were played on the road for SCCC. Seward County improves to 2-3 this season with a 21-20 match record against their opponents.

Seward County defeated Dodge City 7-3 and 7-3 in a pair of conference games at Lady Saints Softball Field in Liberal. Seven Lady Saint sophomores finished their final regular season home game the same way they did almost all of their home games throughout their careers at SCCC, with a convincing victory. SCCC defeated Hutchinson Community College 65-46, in a game the Lady Saints controlled from the opening tip-off.

APRIL 1 – APRIL 30, 2006

The 2005-2006 academic and athletic year is almost complete and with April now finished, four Seward County Community College athletic teams will finish their seasons in hope of winning Regional and National Championship trophies. The Seward County men’s and women’s tennis programs have both qualified for their respective NJCAA National Tournaments with the men finishing in second place in the Regional Tournament and the women placing third. The Seward County baseball and softball teams will compete this weekend in their NJCAA Region VI Tournaments with the baseball winner moving directly into the NJCAA World Series and the softball champion hosting the District C Playoff the following weekend to advance to the softball World Series.

The Seward County Community College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against Clarendon College. The Saints were trailing in the first game 6-4, when freshman first baseman, Aaron Phillips hit a towering grand slam to right center field to give the Saints an 8-6 lead they would never hand back. The Saints went on to win the first game 9-6 and completed the sweep in impressive fashion in game two, 10-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule decision.

The Seward County Community College softball team finished a six-game home stand yesterday, hosting Frank Phillips College. The Lady Saints swept the non-conference doubleheader 11-3 and 3-2. Tuesday’s pair of victories marks the longest winning streak of the season for the SCCC softball squad, as they were coming off two victories over McCook C.C. on Sunday.

The Lady Saints improve to 7-5 overall this season and will open their Jayhawk West Conference schedule tomorrow at Pratt Community College at 2:00 p.m.

The Seward County Community College athletic department currently has six of their seven sports all in their respective regular seasons. The men’s and women’s basketball teams are approaching their Region VI playoffs, the Saints baseball team is underway in their non-conference schedule, Seward County’s softball program will play their first Jayhawk West Conference game on Thursday and the Saints and Lady Saints tennis teams have already participated in their first official tournament.

There will be a Saints Booster Club Meeting today at 12:00 p.m. in the Seward County Community College (SCCC) Activities Center in Room SW229D. Today will be the seventh meeting of the 2005-2006 school year.

SCCC coaches will give their monthly report and Booster Club officials will report any new activities that are being planned.
