The Seward County Community College Agriculture Department will sponsor its eighth annual Celebrity Livestock Judging Contest, Nov. 18-19 to raise money for the Agricultural program.

The college is looking for alumni, individuals and businesses to enter a team of three individuals who can judge livestock on Saturday, Nov. 19. No prior judging experience is required. The college will host a social and auction Friday, Nov. 18 at the Seward County Event Center, fairgrounds, to allow each team to purchase one additional member for their team, a "celebrity" judge who has previous judging experience.

During the judging contest, which will take place Saturday, Nov. 19, the highest four individual scores on each team will count toward the team total. The college will award prizes for teams and individuals.

Each team needs to pre-register with a $50 registration fee, although a team does not have to have all of its members until the judging contest. Anyone who needs additional team members can call Agricultural Instructors Evan Winchester or Ryan Orrick, who will help find individuals to complete a team.

Proceeds from the contest and auction will benefit the agricultural scholarship fund through the SCCC Development Foundation.

The Seward County Community College Music Department invites the public for a Jazz Concert at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the SCCC Showcase Theater.

The concert will feature the Liberal High School Redskin Singers, the SCCC Sound Express Show Choir, the LHS Jazzmen and the SCCC Swingin' Saints.
The place to be Halloween night is Seward County Community College when it sponsors its annual trick or treat street for children from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31.

A variety of clubs and organizations at Seward County Community College are sponsoring Trick or Treat Street from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31 in the Student Union and Student Living Center on the east side of campus.

Community children are invited to participate in this safe Halloween party and enjoy a variety of activities, entertainment and snacks.

Children can come dressed in their Halloween costumes, carrying their Halloween sacks.

Trick or Treat Street is free and open to the public.
The Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology has awarded the Seward County Community College Surgical Technology program a certificate of achievement for results on its Program Assessment Exam.

SCCC's Surgical Technology Program is now considered one of the top 20 programs in the nation following the outstanding accomplishments of its students who graduated in July 2005.

The PAE is a test that all CAAHEP accredited surgical technology programs are required to give to its students as a means to determine the quality of the educational program, said Carmen Sumner, SCCC Surgical Technology coordinator.

"We are very proud of our students who helped us achieve this honor," Sumner said.

ARC-ST recognizes the top 20 programs by providing a certificate of recognition and the programs will be listed in the AST Instructors Newsletter and on the PAE web site.

The Seward County Community College Nursing Department is offering continuing nursing education that will cover "anxiety disorders. . . What we need to know" & "LTC Culture Change. . . making it work for you," Nov. 10-11 in SW229 of the SCCC Student Activities Center.

Beth Whisler, MA, psychology and education instructor, at Cloud County Community College, and Carolyn Westin, RN, BSN, MA, program coordinator and nurse consultant for Sunflower LTC Consultants, will be the featured speakers.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 10 and topics will include anxiety disorders and their causes and symptoms, treatments, reduction of symptoms, characteristics of culture change, caring for dementia patients, changing behaviors and "person-directed" environments.

OSHA Joins Seward County Community College in Alliances to Raise Safety and Health Awareness

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Seward County Community College (SCCC) have joined forces in two alliances – one to promote workplace safety and health for workers in the oil and gas industry and another for warehousing industry workers.

OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao’s ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Through one alliance, OSHA will provide SCCC with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help protect employees' health and safety, particularly reducing and preventing exposure to work-related injuries for oil and gas industry workers in the southwest region of Kansas.

The second alliance will provide SCCC and Springhouse Frozen Foods, a local supplier of food to distributors, with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them reduce and prevent work-related injuries for warehousing industry workers in Kansas.

“This cooperative effort is designed to achieve three goals – better training and education, more outreach and communication, and increased public awareness of workplace safety and health,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Charles E. Adkins, CIH.

During these two-year alliances, OSHA and SCCC will work jointly to develop oil and gas industry training and education programs that emphasize recognition and prevention of workplace hazards. Workplace safety and health curricula will be designed and made available through the university covering such topics as hazard awareness and recognition, benefits of effective safety and health programs, and OSHA recordkeeping.

OSHA, SCCC and Springhouse Frozen Foods also will work jointly to develop general warehousing training programs that emphasize recognition and prevention of workplace hazards. A workplace safety and health curriculum will cover such topics as plant sanitation, general warehousing, forklift operation and plant mechanical maintenance. SCCC and Springhouse Frozen Foods will deliver or arrange for the delivery of these courses.

Outreach efforts to employees and employers will include safety and health conferences, seminars, workshops, and Web site information for the local community.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA’s role is to assure the safety and health of America’s workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health. The Seward County Community College Board of Trustees met recently to review a new accrediting process and a communication system update.

SCCC is looking at the Academic Quality Improvement Program that will replace the present North Central Accreditation process.
